Working From Home: Expectation vs. Reality

What to expect when you’re expecting glamour.

Many people think about becoming an entrepreneur and envision working from eclectic indie coffee shops, libraries, bookstores, that hole-in-the-wall taco shop near your house, or in an open plan co-working office.

That could happen, sure. On the days you don’t have any calls or meetings, or the days when you shower.

Most days, you’ll look up and it’s 2 in the afternoon and you’re still in your pajamas at your desk and you have worked on 4 different projects but nothing is fully complete and you have a bunch of new emails and texts you don’t want to open.

Working from home requires a certain mindset, and also presents a few challenges you may not have thought of yet.

Here are a few things to consider when you prepare to work from home full-time.

Do you have a dedicated workspace? Do you currently just work from your couch or kitchen table, or do you have a specific desk/office area? Having a specific and dedicated workspace is important to be able to get in the “work” mindset and not get as easily distracted.

Are you already profitable? If not, a co-working space is not the best place to be, since they cost money. Also, when you work from home, you can write off part of your utility, rent, internet bills and more as business expenses!

Are you on the phone a lot? If so, you won’t want to be in a library or a loud bagel shop. In a library, you’ll be disturbing others and in a cafe, you may be hard to hear over the ambient noise and can get easily distracted and frustrated.

Are you organized? This is important. The only way to get things done when you have no boss is to do it yourself. You have to know and meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and know where everything is. It is very important to have a way to keep yourself on schedule and organized.

Do you have things to get you out of the house (friends, volunteering, etc.)? Trust me, you will need to get out sometimes. It is easy to isolate yourself and forget to put on pants and leave the house. But you need to get out, wear real clothes, and see other people! You’ll also appreciate the break. It’s also good for your mental health to get up and get out when you can. When I’m super busy, I find myself in my home for a couple of days at a time without feeling the sun kiss my cheeks.

Working from home is exactly and nothing like what I thought it would be.

I am less distracted and more productive than I thought I would be, but I am more isolated and work much longer hours. I am constantly connected!

I am home more and sometimes a little lonely but I also have a lot more control over when I work, who I work with, and the types of projects I choose to do.

Working from home is certainly not glamourous and really more about forgetting to shower that day until I have a video call and convincing myself to go take a walk in between phone meetings and working on editing projects.

I love it, but it is not what I expected!
