Words Gone Wild
Getting lost in linguistic laughter
Norm Crosby hit the noodle on its curly end when he joked,
“I once took a course in ‘linguistic laughter.’ Thought I’d be a word maestro. Instead, I’m giggling over spaghetti!” (Classic Norm (1927–2020), always confusing his linguini with linguistics.)
Take a seat: The funny side of... sitting?
At age four, I found myself in a cramped living room adorned with faded wallpaper and the faint hum of a black-and-white TV. It was there that my little toes wriggled into fabulous kitten mules. The sensation? Electric. My siblings lounged on the floral-patterned couch, half-watching TV, half-watching their over-enthusiastic sister. Taking a deep breath, I pranced downstairs, facing our bulky TV.
Imagine a 4-year-old blurting jokes she barely understood.
“Why did the chicken wear kitten heels? To look egg-stra special!”
Their reactions? A mix of chuckles and the occasional, “Not again!”
Ever tried balancing on one foot, in heels, while cracking a joke? It’s like juggling flamingos. But sitting? Pull up a chair. Let’s dive deep into this whirlwind world of sit-down chuckles, all with a pinch of Norm Crosby magic.
Imagine:
A dim, smoky comedy club. Faint murmurs, clinking glasses, dimmed lights casting long, curious shadows. Right in the spotlight, there’s a plush, red velvet chair.
You’re waiting. The air is thick with anticipation. Everyone’s expecting some sharp-dressed comedian to strut in. Instead? In they come, pause, smirk, and declare,
“These feet? They’re on strike!” Immediate uproar.
Now, why sit-down comedy? Besides the obvious mismatched shoes or the sheer allure of a soft seat, there’s history. I recall rehearsing in my living room, trying to sync with a chair that seemed more foe than friend. I’d trip, misstep, and once, even tried to spin on it. Result? A bruised ego and a hilarious memory.
Classic sit-down moments?
Think of the greats. Remember when comedians of yesteryear had an entire argument with a stool? Genius. It’s more than just sitting; it’s an art. It’s choreographed in sit-down, hand gestures, leg cross, and even how you tilt. The energy? Different, but dynamic.
Oh, and the chair! It’s not just wood and fabric; it’s a partner. My chair, I named him Chuck. He’s got a bit of an attitude, leans slightly to the left, and often challenges my every move. But over time? We’re like Batman and Robin, except we are the sidekicks.
So, feet up or feet down, it’s all about that sweet, sweet laughter. The next big comedy wave? It might be all about taking a comfy seat
Dive in, chair-ish every moment, and remember:
A good joke always stands out, even if you’re sitting down, standing up, or writing as you’re running!
“Why did the joke stand up? Because it couldn’t just sit there while you ran your mouth!”🤣
A quick nod to Norm Crosby
In the comedy world, there are giants, and then there’s Norm Crosby. Born in Boston in 1927, this master of mirth wasn’t just any comedian; he was my personal favorite of all time. He had audiences, including me, with his linguistic antics, both confused and cackling. While we lost him in 2020, his legacy of laughter lives on. To many, he’s a legend.
To me? He’s the reason I cherish every chuckle. As we giggle over “linguistic” mishaps and other word blunders that he turned into comedic gold, let’s tip our hats to the king of comedic confusion. Norm showed us that in humor, sometimes getting it ‘wrong’ is oh-so-right
Norm Crosby has authored several books over his long comedy career that showcase his humor and unique comedic language skills.
