The ever-popular word puzzle game, Wordle, took an amazing turn this week when it was sold to the New York Times for a “low seven figures”.

Wordle was originally created by Josh Wardle (get it? Wardle/Wordle?) for himself and his partner to play. They launched it publicly last October 2021.

Since then, this free, 5-letter puzzle game has become a viral sensation, resulting in hilarious arguments over what’s the best first-word strategy and why. NPR even recently released an article about how what your approach to Wordle says about you as a person and how you see the world.

The New York Times hopes this move will help their readership numbers. They’ve stated Wordle will continue to remain a free game for the public.
