Woofed Allegiance

Just another poem of the times.

“You didn’t know anything about such high science. Like, the kingly sin ting, something that I am, and hence…” So said the blabber mouther to them that evening at the Wynants fence, and peeping in. “Now that you’re in, you’re going to begin to know many things, soon. It’s my house, and I live here, once you get in through these doors of ours, those over there on your side of the shores, my lords, will be as good to you and the rest of us, as dead leopards. Just as you were,” he said. So I lifted my stride high, pumped the high tide, and spoke. Woof woof alliance mi bred.

No, Aunt Sue, I never lied to you. It’s just that I never knew that there were some things that I could not do, no matter how much I wanted to, because I wasn’t allowed to. The little that I’d managed to push through, though, sometimes makes me want to hiss, holler, and puke, oh, because. It wasn’t what I wanted to leave as a legacy for my children and these kiddies of yours to thrill them. But every little thing is going to be alright, right? Woof, woof, alliance, she replied, in spite.

“That’s the only way for you and them to get into the knowledge zone, my friend. You do know that much, no?”

“Yes, my brother man,” I replied, but…

“Those who had gotten you elected and sent over here among the wretched,” he continued, “won’t matter anymore, my dear. No matter what requests or demands they might have made on you, and at your giving hands before you got here. Or those promises that you would have made to them, swore and swear upon the irons.” Woof woof alliance, was what we said again, to strike up a balance.

“Yes, I’ll go,” I said. “Because…”

“I know, I know, just like you, they too didn’t have a clue. They didn’t know these things before they got you in. The only way for them to know is to do what you have done, get themselves elected, and then come back through these doors of mine to enter the cribs.” Yes, mi pickneys, go, open up those oval-shaped doors of his and come into the house of knowledge and everything more, that’s it. Woof woof alliance, we all said, and got me reluctantly repeated.

That’s how he came over and shook the hands of the high man and got me to swear allegiance, which turned me into what I am today. But every little thing is going to be alright, of course, right? Woof woof alliance I heard them say again. Amen. Well, sleep tight, I said, and have a good night mi bred. 😴 😴 😴.
