Wonders of the World
Where to go and why
There are always new and amazing constructions all around the world but these seven wonders will always be considered as such because of the specific work and artistry needed at a certain given time. I can also certainly say that these wonders took an important part in humanity.
In 2000, a Swiss foundation decided to update this list with over 100 million votes! Do you know all the official seven wonders? Here, you will be able to find a summary of each one. There is always so much to learn!
The Great Wall of China
This structure was created to protect the Chinese Empire from the Mongols. It is the longest manmade structure as it covers over 5,500 miles! Did you know that this construction started in the 7th century BCE and lastest over 2 millennia! It just amazes me how The Great Wall of China lays over mountains as if it was nothing. 🗻
.
Petra
This ancient city is located in Jordan. The rock-cut architecture is what attracts tourism. In the past, trade routes flourished, and so did important water systems. The Nabataeans are the Arab tribe who created this wonderful “Rose City”, named after the color of the stone in which it’s carved. 🌹
.
Machu Picchu
This Incan site in Peru is one of the few pre-Columbian ruins that is almost entirely intact. As seen in the photo, even though the height and terrain, this site includes temples, agricultural terraces, plazas, and residential areas. The Andes Mountains were no excuse to build such an important site. A curious fact is that they used stones because it was a way to prevent damage caused by earthquakes. 😲
.
Christ The Redeemer
Río de Janeiro, Brazil is where this colossal statue of Jesus is located. It was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa, Carlos Oswald, and Paul Landowski; the construction started in 1926 and lasted for five more years. This Art Deco statue has over six million tiles and is over 124 feet tall! The downfall is that it often gets struck by lightning. ⚡️
.
Colosseum
This oval-shaped amphitheater is in the center of Rome, Italy. It could hold up to 50,000 spectators. It is said that the main events were gladiator fights and unfortunately, 500,000 people have died there. There is a complex system of vaults and also waterways for when there were mock naval engagements. ⛵️
.
Taj Mahal
This mausoleum is from Mughal architecture and it was built to honor the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, Mumtaz Mahal. It took over 22 years for completion. This wonder in India, also includes an enormous garden and the intention of the pool was to reflect the majesty of this construction.
.
Chichén Itzá
This Mayan temple is located in Yucatán, Mexico. The main pyramid is “The Castle” and is over 79 feet tall. As they were great astronomers, there are a total of 365 steps. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, there are shadows that create an illusion of a snake. This place has also been influenced by other tribes such as the Toltecs. 🐍
