Women with Guns, Living Alaska
Granny’s Gotta Gun

Stopping a Bear
I visited the local Gun Shop in Alaska this afternoon. I found what I wanted besides a 9mm semi on the second shelf. The caliber was large, but I was told: “It would not stop a bear. But it will certainly piss a bear off”. I agree; stopping a 500-pound hungry bear is not easy. No wonder guns are like boots in Alaska; everybody has them, even Grandma.
Please, No Guns at School
I took a class at the local university a couple of days ago. A female classmate told me about the new gun she bought. I was interested, so she pulled it from her backpack and showed it to me. The girl sitting next to me said she had the same one but the gold-plated version. It was a nine with a short barrel, perfect for a purse or fanny pack. The teacher looked over and said, “Nice gun.” The break was over, and we all went back to work. Nothing unusual, no cause for panic; this is Alaska.
Check Your Firearms at the Door
I went to the bar and sat beside a female friend. Her phone rang. While fishing for her phone buried in her purse, she pulled out her gun and set it on the table. Nobody thought anything of it. She answered the phone and put her gun back in her purse. I bought her a beer and continued watching the football game.

Jogging Holsters
I went mountain biking away from humanity last week. I saw what looked like wolf tracks in the fresh snow. I scanned the area for human footprints. Seeing none, I turned around to err on the side of caution. If a dog made the tracks, the owner would have left footprints. I was by myself and about four miles from town. I turned back, and a few miles later, I came across two joggers. I told them about the wolf tracks ahead. The female jogger said, “Thank you,” and moved her holster from her back to the front of her body. They continued up the trail. I thought a great idea, a rear holster for jogging, less intrusive.
Gold in a Purse
Things are different here in Alaska. Women carry guns. I saw the gold-plated nine that my classmate spoke about. The salesperson said, “It is a very popular model with the ladies in town.” It fits nicely in a purse.
Grandma’s Got a Gun
Even grandma is packing. The older generation has seen plenty of wild animals; one little Grizzly encounter can change your life. There is no getting away from nature in Alaska. Alaskans grow up hunting with rifles, shotguns, and sidearms. No wonder women here have no problem speaking their minds. If you stare down a Grizzly bear, you can deal with men. I like women who carry guns. Welcome to Alaska. From Ketchikan, Alaska, with love and guns.
