With All Recent Changes At Medium, Comments Still Work!

Recently, a trend of “readers” mainly only clapping on comments has emerged on this platform. And there is one theory that these comment clappers might actually be motivated purely by their own self-interest as stated by Sahil Patel :

“I’ve realized that some readers might be doing this to get more visibility for their own Medium profiles. By clapping for comments, they hope to catch the attention of the people who wrote those comments."

A few weeks ago, I too experienced a similar situation and I joked about it in a Facebook group post:

However, as the claps continued to pile up on that comment and others, it brought to mind something I’ve known for a long time. In fact, I had even written a story about it to inform fellow newbies. The delightful thing is: I began getting notifications showing a number of the new readers clapping on my comments and also clapping on my own stories (presumably after visiting my profile) and some went on to become new followers!

So, if you are a writer on this platform please know that leaving thoughtful, insightful comments on the stories you read here is still a great source of new connections and opportunities.

How?

Simply leave good comments on your fellow writers’ stories- something relevant and thoughtful that adds to the conversation. However, you may want to first take the time to read the stories so you have something worthwhile to say.

Note that even criticism, when crafted with good intentions and care can spark intriguing discussions that facilitate valuable connections.

Why they work:

The comments not only show your genuine interest but also signal to other readers that your profile is worth exploring. And the more profile views you get, the more potential followers and readers of your own stories thereby amplifying your reach, and of course, earnings if you’re in the MPP!

The golden rule:

The rule is simply to make genuine contributions, expressions of appreciation, or interest. This rule not only helps us maintain a vibrant community here but it also helps cultivate that loyal audience for your own work.

Good luck fellow writers!
