Wishing You a Good Day

With a song recommendation from my heart

As I transitioned to filling my day with podcasts, I found myself getting further and further from music. Music used to be such a solid part of my life, especially as a teen. Not only did I listen to music all the time during high school, but about 60% of my extracurricular activities were music-related. I was in choir, band and jazz band, just to name a few!

The existence of the Songstories publication is helping me return to my roots. In being able to share my favourite songs with readers I hope to share a piece of joy with everyone in a few short minutes. That’s the magic of music.

Today’s recommendation is Good Day by IU (아이유), a song that has accompanied through the angsty phases of puberty by adding a little bit of almost Christmas-y joy to my day.

Yes, IU is known as a kpop singer but I think her contributions to the Korean music industry are more than that. It’s actually really rare for someone to have trained to be a kpop singer to debut as a single person rather than a group. Think Blackpink, BTS — these were all debuted as whole groups before they split off into individual ventures.

What’s also different about IU’s journey is that she started off with a small company, rather than the “big 3” kpop companies that were known to produce successful groups based on experience and popularity.

IU really worked against the grain here and Good Day not only represents a good day, or a good piece of music. This song was what rocketed her to fame after being unnoticed with her debut song. This song represents how grit and perseverance came to fruition against all odds.

So I dedicate this song to all readers who might be in need of a good day, or a drop of change in your life. I hope that this song brings joy into your life so that it makes it a bit less bitter to walk through your day.

Hi I’m Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) and while I’ve written about kpop a few times, it’s not the only thing I like to listen to! I listen to a wide array of genres and am always looking for new recommendations, so feel free to let me know if you have any! I also have an ongoing project where I take recommendations for songs so that I can return with a poem that captures how I felt after the song, so feel free to drop your favourite song here!
