Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of choosing the right self-defense method, such as using a stick over a knife, to ensure one can live with the consequences of their actions during a confrontation.

Abstract

The author discusses the ethical considerations of self-defense, stressing that the use of a knife, while potentially lethal, may not immediately incapacitate an attacker and could lead to long-lasting psychological consequences for the defender. Instead, the author suggests learning to fight with a stick as a less deadly but still effective alternative. The article advises readers to train in self-defense methods they are comfortable with and to take personal responsibility for their safety. It concludes by inviting readers to explore further knowledge and to visit the author's website for more information.

Win in a way you can live with

One of the battles you need to win in every fight is that you have to be able to live with whatever you do to someone.

A lot of people say they want to learn to be able to fight with a knife.

I ask why a knife.

They usually say I want to stop someone if they attack me.

Just because you have a knife does not necessarily mean you’re going to stop somebody right away. You might kill them but it’s not going to happen instantly. They could still keep fighting after you cut them. If you don’t cut something that disables them they can keep coming.

Know that when you use a knife you are using deadly force.

Not only will there be greater consequences because you use deadly force you will have to live with whatever you do.

If you cannot live with having killed somebody than maybe you should learn to use another way. Fight with a stick.

Learning to fight with a stick can be just as effective as a knife and less deadly. Stopping someone from hurting you without killing them is usually a better way to deal with an attack.

Don’t put yourself in the situation that you don’t need to be in. Learn whatever means to protect yourself you can and take the responsibility yourself.

Train the things you can live with.

Train as if your life depends upon it. It just might.
