Rewriting Life’s Next Chapter
The post-pandemic mindset necessary to arrive on the other side with the will and the plan to win big.
Ok, here we are. A global pandemic.
On the surface, it was (and still is) a public health emergency and a nightmare that revealed global issues that need attention even during normal operations.
Below the surface though, it revealed a slew of personal issues that were the result of isolation, quarantine, and distancing. When countries announced lockdown, our relationships were tested. When companies announced mandatory remote work, our time management was tested. When schools announced online classes — our sanity was severely tested.
Keeping us away from loved ones and societal support systems was a disaster for our mental health. Panic attacks became commonplace. Depressive overeating became the norm. Uncertainty and the lack of control caused even the best of us to give up on our positivity.
Anxiety? Check!
Stress? Check!
Mental exhaustion? Check!
May is Mental Health Awareness month and it could not have come at a more appropriate time.
The good news is that we are going to come out of this situation. The goal is to come out stronger and more determined to win big in the post-pandemic life. Years down the road we want to remember that the year 2020 sucked but pushed our life in a positive direction.
The will to win is worthless if you do not have the will to prepare.
Let us talk about how to prepare ourselves mentally. What can we do now so we are our best selves on the other side of these lockdowns?
How do we get into the right mindset now that many of us are close to seeing the other side of this crisis? In the United States, many establishments will be operational in a few weeks and months. People are differently affected but if they are not in the right success mindset, opportunities will be hard to come by.
We all have 2 choices:
- Wait till total personal destruction, or
- Write a new personal success story.
Things have been hard. No one will ever deny that.
You may be broken; cracked… even chipped or shattered. But I am here to tell you you can still start fresh. You can still bounce back. You are not a glass mug that can never work again once broken.
Here is how to come out blossoming on the other side.
Prepare
The will to win is worthless if you do not have the will to prepare.
Get a calendar out and mark off the little things you can do on a consistent daily basis to get your mind right back on track. Here is a list you can get started with:
- 10 Job applications a day for the next 30 days. 300 applications now, ought to get you some interviews by the time businesses open back up. Stand out from the crowd now! You may have lost a job but prepare now to get ahead of everyone else.
- Move every day. Get your posture and physiology back into balance. Don’t like pushups? Fine, do jumping jacks or yoga or skip rope. MOVE! I cannot stress this enough — when you move your body, your face glows and your brain thinks much more clearly. You need your brain on the other side of this lockdown big time!
- Read for 30 minutes every day to improve something about yourself. You have not been in public for the last two months. Better make sure your social skills are sharp (minus the handshakes off-course)! Your words are the window to your personality, character, and mindset. Make sure you are reading something positive to dilute all the negative news you’ve been consuming.
- Start messaging the decision-makers in your field on social media. Get a conversation going so that when the world opens up, you already have the doors open for you. Get active on LinkedIn. Get active on Medium. Use Instagram to change your life! The goal is to get out of the mental funk that staying at home has gotten us into.
Market yourself
If you are rewriting your success story, your name must be on the top of your priority list. So it becomes supremely important that you market yourself.
All you are doing by getting your name out there is you are increasing the possibilities of options coming your way.
Overcome the feeling of hopelessness by increasing your number of options. Mimic the marketing strategy of retail stores and start displaying things around your home that support the upcoming chapter that you are hoping for in your life.
Get your mind to believe that things will get better for you.
Surround yourself with pictures that suggest the future. Advertise the promise of the future to yourself. Because if you don’t buy the promise then how can you expect the world to?
Announce yourself to the world. How you face your current situation will demonstrate what you believe about yourself. It is ok to solicit whatever help you can gather. A healthy sense of self will produce a healthy set of results.
This is easier said than done, I understand. However, my sincere hope is that you identify and embrace your standout quality and get busy marketing you.
Make sure the world knows your brand. Your personal brand!
Reflect
Patience is determined by how you wait, not how long you wait.
This global experience, no matter how terrible, is a unique one. This has not happened in modern history. A small bit of reflection time for what you have gone through will create a learning experience that will be unrivaled!
Experiences produce hope… but only when reflected upon.
I encourage you to journal about these times. The experiences, the thoughts, the feelings, and the emotions. Writing about it empowers your confidence to do greater things.
Get those caustic thoughts on paper. Long enough that eventually hopeful and positive words are released. Our minds are inherently always looking for solutions. The brain does not like uncertainty, so during the act of writing, you will notice that some solutions will present themselves to you as well.
Ponder on them!
This gives your mind even more ammunition for new ideas. Before you know it, you will start an avalanche of positive energy. Your journal will become a hope chest of possibilities.
A treasure trove of experiences.
You will notice an outpouring of your heart on the paper along with the wisdom that you never thought you had.
Keep at it though. The goal is not to do this just once. The goal is to get ourselves mentally ready for when the world opens up.
Prepare yourself. Market yourself. Reflect on this journey.
Getting your mindset in tip-top shape is the primary objective.
Remember we all have two choices: Total destruction… or… rewriting our success story.
You choose.
