Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock At The Oscars And People Are Overreacting
There’s a weird racist element to this
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face during the 2022 Academy Awards on Sunday.
The media has been in a frenzy. Everyone is taken aback that an actor as iconic as Will Smith would resort to violence by slapping another person during a live showing on stage.
I can’t lie, I thought it was staged when my sister sent me the video.
Now it’s clear Will wasn’t playing.
Everyone has been split down the middle when it comes to this situation.
You have the people on Twitter who view this situation as a husband defending his wife and you have others who view this as an assault that should prohibit Will Smith from being invited again.
This Won’t Affect Will Smith’s Legacy at All
One weird thing I’ve seen all over social media is people saying that Will Smith tarnished his legacy and we’ll never view him the same anymore.
That argument makes no sense at all.
Will Smith’s legacy is already solidified. He’s been in iconic shows and movies since most of us were in diapers. He has his own production company. He has a YouTube channel with over 10 million subscribers.
This is a bump in the road, but you’re eating something weird if you think this situation will scar Will Smith’s legacy.
I’m Glad Will Smith Defended His Wife (a Black Woman)
I’ve seen other media channels use Kanye West as a hypothetical for this situation.
“Put Kanye West in Will Smith’s shoes. If he went up and slapped Chris Rock, what would happen? He’d get killed by the media.”
That’s a great point, but there’s a difference.
1. Kanye was married to a white woman
2. Kanye has made creepy, verbal threats to his ex-wife all over social media — which is why he is banned from the Grammys
People have tried to turn this into a favoritism situation and it’s not.
Jada Pinkett-Smith has made it public that she’s had Alopecia (which is an auto-immune disease that causes balding) since 2018. There have been multiple instances of Chris Rock making jokes about her on social media during the whole “Oscars so white” fiasco.
It’s understandable why Will Smith popped off the way he did.
Why Is There Such a Visceral Reaction When Black Women Are Protected?
“The most unprotected person in America is the black woman.”
— Malcolm X
The people that say Will Smith should be arrested and charged for assault are BEYOND dramatic.
Black women are barely protected if at all. The fact that Will defended his wife physically is what a husband, especially a black husband to a black woman, should do.
Black women are always the butt of terrible jokes. Chris Rock’s “G.I. Jane” joke about Jada wasn’t funny.
If it wasn’t funny to me, and I don’t know Jada, imagine how upsetting it had to be for Will.
I’ve been the butt of jokes myself in school. It’s easy to take on the chin when the jokes are fresh. But when they’re used on you over and over again, it gets to a point where you want to throw hands.
Should Will have his Oscar taken away?
Hell no.
They decided who won the Oscar BEFORE he got on stage to slap Chris. This situation shouldn’t affect how well he did as King Richard.
I mean…how many Oscars has Woody Allen won?
Final Thought
Will Smith did a phenomenal job in King Richard and an even better job protecting his black wife.
Black women aren’t protected as much as we should be and we shouldn’t be made the butt of everyone’s jokes either. Will Smith shouldn’t be portrayed as an animal because I know tons of other people who would do the same thing he did.
If someone threatens your family, you don’t hold back.
It shouldn’t be a crime to protect your black family — even if you use violence.
