Will Smith Hits Chris Rock For Telling a Joke at the Oscars
It begs the question, what does he do behind closed doors?
A comedian told an edgy joke at an awards show. Who would have thought it?
The joke was about Will Smith’s wife. He initially found it hilarious. His wife didn’t. She clearly has no sense of humor. But this is where it should have ended. Someone offended by a joke. Like every Ricky Gervais joke at the Golden Globes.
Nope.
Instead of moving on and getting on with the show, Will Smith gets up on stage and ruins his reputation in 1 single moment, slapping an unexpecting Chris Rock in the face.
The Not-So-Fresh-Prince has shown a sinister side to his personality that he has been able to mask for so long.
Many have now asked the question, should he be stripped of his Oscar?
Will has been celebrated in society. And rightly so for the most part. He has had a great career and has been an inspiration for many. Not only for his diverse body of work but he was viewed as an all-around nice guy, with patience and integrity.
Not anymore.
Is this how he behaves behind the curtain?
If he is willing to slap someone at the biggest award ceremony in the world, what does he do behind closed doors when the world’s not watching?
What does he do when the cameras aren't rolling? I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if allegations start rising to the surface off the back of this. We shouldn't start jumping the gun and making up false accusations, but it does make you question whether that was a one-off. It felt like he has done that before.
I lost all respect I had for him at that moment. Firstly, because he slapped him. If you are gonna do something in the first place, make sure it is at least a punch. Pathetic.
Secondly, that’s Chris Rock you’re slapping. Who do you think you are?
Chris Rock has done himself proud with the way he handled it all. Not only did he show a great chin — he was clearly not expecting it and absorbed it like a champ. But he was then still able to joke about it immediately after, saying
That was the greatest night in the history of television.
Even when Will was embarrassingly shouting get my wife’s f***ing name out of your mouth, Rock defused the situation the best he could. Bravo to that man.
People will predictably defend Will with this feeble argument
I know some people are gonna go down a certain path to defend Will’s actions.
“You shouldn't say something about someone's wife.”
“There are some things you just don’t joke about.”
His wife has suffered from alopecia and is clearly sensitive about it.
The joke didn’t hit the target and was ill-judged by Rock, but let’s not forget that’s his job.
You may not find his joke funny. But that is not justification for assaulting someone unexpectedly on stage. You are not the only people he made jokes about. He’s a comedian, he makes ‘offensive’ jokes constantly. That’s what he does. Grow up, Will.
The ego of the Smith family has clearly gotten out of control. This show is the Oscars not the Smith family tribute show.
The self-centered Smiths are terrible role models. Their behavior is like their marriage. A complete mess.
Another reminder that all the success in the world doesn’t make you happy
It goes to show, you can be an absolute genius in your craft, have all the money in the world and still be unhappy and deeply insecure.
It is another not-so-subtle reminder of how entitled men in power get. They are often fueled with anger and set a bad example.
It looks like Will has a switch that gets flicked and he can turn into a monster. If he is willing to lose his head in front of millions, imagine what happens when no one is watching.
His son, Jayden’s tweet immediately after the incident is quite disturbing:
‘And that’s how we do it!’
Have you been on the receiving end of some of those for not doing your homework Jayden? What an example your dad is setting…
I used to be a big fan of Will Smith. There is no doubt he has achieved so much and come a long way. He used to be an inspiration to me. Not anymore.
We’re not buying your ‘authentic’ apology
I didn’t buy the bs apology he gave when he accepted his Oscar. He is an actor after all so has the ability to turn on the waterworks faster than a tap.
He knew all eyes were on him after assaulting someone for no justifiable reason. He should have been escorted off the property instead of getting the chance to go on stage again.
The moment he got on stage and attacked a comedian for doing his job with an embarrassing bitch slap is the moment many people all over the world lost respect for him. Myself included.
Chris Rock again filled himself in glory by deciding not to press charges. Everything he did during that incident, he handled with class.
Violence is never the answer
Will needs to take a long hard look at himself. From the outside, it seems as if he is struggling with something and needs to get some help. Violence is never the answer.
One positive we can take out of this is Ricky Gervais wasn’t hosting. The joke would have been way harsher and would have ended up with so much more than a bitch slap.
