Will Smith, Ephesians 5, and the Beauty of Cleansing a Wife

Jerry Avenaim, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Ephesians 5

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

3 different Catholic schools growing up, but they all had one thing in common.

Teaching me lessons on Epesians 5. Wives submit to your Husbands.

The other side of Epesians 5? That mysterious part about husbands giving themselves up for their wives, cleansing her, and keeping her holy? Yeah, just some kind of deep Biblical mystery, I guess.🤣

And it would have continued to be a mystery….If I didn’t see Will Smack…I mean Will Smith (Honest error, but I decided to leave it in😝🤣 ) smack Chris Rock to defend his wifes honor.

And then, like a dying light bulb suddenly sparking to life, Epesians 5 became clear to me.

And what a lovely verse it is 😍

He is the savior of the body.

“Giving yourself up for your wife” had to mean more than literally dying to protect her. C’mon!

I know God likes balance, so if wives have to submit to their husbands everyday, so do husbands have to “die to self” everyday. My God is righteous.

I believe “die to self” means the husband doesn’t do what he wants to do or what might feel natural for him. He sacrifices his own desires for his wife and for their marriage.

For instance, he wants to hang out with the boys Wednesday night. His wife wants him to stay home to help their son with his math homework, because the husband is good at math. Who submit’s to who?

While dying to self might seem like male submission to women, I see one big difference in the two ideas:

A woman submits to her own husband with submission, but the husband actually submits to “the marriage” and to “Christ” with his dying to self. He is not obeying his wife, he’s doing what's best for his wife and the family, as God in Christ commanded him too.

So yeah, hanging out with the homies? Another time perhaps. Let’s see why that boy keeps failing calculus…

The Cleansing of the Wife

Christ believed that being nailed to the cross was God’s will and a way to cleanse the church.

But how? How did Christ dying for the church cleanse it?

It’s because he made the church seem precious by making such a huge sacrifice for it!

People you make sacrifices for immediately seem more precious, important and “clean”.

Jada Pinkette Smith has been getting dragged in social circles, particularly black social circles and the manosphere, for sometime now.

I don’t know why people don’t seem to like this woman so much. 🤷🏾And I believe some of the hate had to come before the great “entanglement” scandal, but it reached a fever pitch during the “entanglement” and then continued on when Jada maybe said a little too much about her and Will’s sex life on her Red table talks show.

My opinion on all of that? Well, I immediately felt it was a bad idea for the “Red Table Talk” show to be hosted by a married woman. When I heard the nature of the show, I knew she would have to delve into topics that might be uncomfortable and embarrassing for her husband. If not, the show would be boring. So there was little hope of this turning out good for their marriage.

But as far as the “entanglement” goes, apparently she and Will had an open relationship. So there was no reason to get so excited about it, since it was something both Will and She agreed to. The young man Jada supposedly “cheated” with even asked Will Smith's permission or blessing, wild as that may sound.

But despite all that, a lot of folks judge Jada as an unfit wife for a beloved actor like Will Smith.

Which is why I think Will Smith lashed out in such a way at Chris Rock. Chris Rocks joke, in all honesty, was corny but mild. But I think Will just got tired of people talking bad about Jada, and unfortunately Chris Rock became the one to receive the results of Will’s frustration.

But the act Will did of defending Jada’s honor and risking his award and so much for her? Has cleansed her a lot.

Yeah, people are still talking crap about Jada, but Will’s smack shut a lot of people up. Now many are curious what’s so fantastic about this woman that a man would do such a thing.

He elevated her status to the point that it doesn’t matter what anyone is saying about her anymore. She seems special that a man would make such a big sacrifice and risk humiliation for her.

Just as Christ's death on the cross made Christians seem special and amazing, even those who were not necessarily following Christ's teachings yet.

Will Smith's sacrifice for his wife has done much the same for Jada.

She must be an amazing woman to get an amazing man! Since we know like attracts like.

Seriously, Mrs. Smith, write a book. We all out here trying to know your secrets. Because sheesh, it’s dry out here for us single girls 😩

❤️
