Will Racism Ever End?

Philadelphia riots are YET another sad chapter

In Philadelphia, 27-year-old Walter Wallace, a black man, had a knife. Police were called as he was brandishing the weapon in a frightening manner, according to the officers. The disturbing video indicates that a woman was trying to help him and calm him down. The man walked towards the officers, and they backed up. They made no moves to try and disarm the man. They did tell him to drop the knife, but he refused. He was shot multiple times by the officers. I have not included the video here. You can view the incent online.

He was shot in front of his brother and mother and died at the Presbyterian Hospital. It is indicated that he was around 20 feet away from the officers when they decided to unload their weapons. His father said he was on medications and had mental health issues at the time of the shooting. After this incident, a riot took place in Philadelphia, and several officers were injured.

This is Conflict Resolution?

Is this the way that police resolve conflicts or civil disturbances? This man was executed in the street by the officers. He was not disarmed and then arrested. He was shot multiple times by trigger happy cops. The officers could have used non-lethal means to take the knife from him. Like so many in recent years, he did not have to die.

A knife is a dangerous weapon, and officers were in danger, but a knife is not a sawed-off shotgun or a 9mm pistol. It is a knife. If the officers had proper training and skills on conflict resolution, Wallace would probably be alive today. He would more than likely be charged with assault, granted access to a lawyer, and given a trial like most people. He does not get that right as he got ventilated in the street for having a knife and threatening the police. They decided to be the jury and the executioner, not the court of law.

A taser or other non-lethal means should have been used to get the man to drop the knife. The police did not even attempt that. They simply killed him for being armed with a knife without trial, without a lawyer, and without his due process. Police are supposed to arrest suspects, not gun them down in the street like a mangy dog. Lethal force should only be used as a very last resort. In this case, it was the first resort. I think we can understand why riots happen after an incident like this. Now, I do not excuse the riot, but the reason leading up to the riot is clear.

Poorly Trained Cops

I have watched countless videos of poorly trained cops. They are acting out their racist fantasies in plain sight. I see suspects being kicked, punched, their heads are driven into the sidewalk. In other cases, with the mere sight of a weapon, they unload like the wild west. This is not policing. It is terrorizing. It does not matter one lick what these suspects have or have not done. That is for the court to decide. All suspects should be treated the same. That sort of force is completely unjustified. I have watched these videos time and time again. Police are not policing.

Officers should be able to wrestle a suspect that is resisting arrest to the ground and place them under arrest them without resorting to kicking or punching them like they are is some WWE wrestling match. That is not arresting. It is abusing the suspect before you arrest them! If the officer cannot arrest someone without smashing their skull into the pavement, I would send them back to the gym or train them in methods of grappling with a suspect.

This would not include face punches and beating the crap out of them before the arrest take place. I do not think punching or kicking is an arrest tactic. If a suspect is behaving badly, the cops should not be doing the same thing. Get the suspect under control and take them to jail. Police have the right to protect themselves from bodily harm, but they are not assassins.

A Clear Problem

Police have a clear problem. Far too often, they resort to that last resort, which is unloading their weapons into a suspect or turning them into their own personal punching bag. They lack the conflict resolution necessary to disarm suspects and arrest them in a proper manner. I have seen way too many incidents that are not only questionable but look like severe violations of law by the officers themselves. This incident with Wallace will be “investigated,” but it is another indication that police have a lot of work to do.
