Summary

The author discusses the impact of overeating during Christmas on fitness progress, emphasizing that a week of indulgence will not significantly reverse the results of consistent muscle-building efforts.

Abstract

The author has achieved significant muscle gains and is concerned about the effects of holiday overeating on their physique. They acknowledge that many people share this concern, fearing weight gain and the loss of hard-earned progress. However, the author reassures that gaining a pound of fat requires consuming an excess of 3,500 calories daily for possibly up to a week. Much of the immediate weight gain post-overeating is attributed to water weight, which can be quickly lost. The author advises against obsessing over the scale or mirror, suggesting that enjoying holiday meals is part of life and should not induce guilt.

Opinions

  • The author believes that a week of overeating will not drastically undo the progress made in muscle building.

  • They advocate for not fixating on temporary changes in weight or appearance during holidays.
  • The author encourages enjoying holiday foods without guilt, as it is a time of celebration and indulgence.
  • They imply that frequent scale or mirror checks can lead to unnecessary worry over temporary body changes.

Will I Gain Weight From A Week Of Overeating?

I have seen amazing results in my physique — but Christmas is just around the corner and this means plenty of good foods to enjoy…should I be worried?

Abs are slightly showing, biceps are popping — my back is ripped like whaaattt!? I have gained a lot of lean muscle mass over two months! I’ve been putting my running on a halt and been focusing more on building muscles instead now that it’s winter and all. Been lifting a lot of weights and I’m planning to keep this up until spring and see how far I can go.

(Picture of author) you may or may not see some abs forming through my hoodie…

Now, with Christmas just a few days away I know I will indulge in plenty of good foods — something that I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time now.

I can’t help but feel a little worried….

I’ve been working so hard, will a week of overeating knock over all of my hard work? Will I ruin my physique? How much will I gain if I eat without a limit for an entire week? Sheesh…am I allowed to enjoy myself?

I’m sure that I am not the only one who’s had these thoughts. I bet a lot of you guys are in a similar position. Going into the Christmas celebrations a little skeptical, afraid to let go, worried you will lose what you’ve worked so hard to get, afraid of gaining weight and having to start all over again…

Let me ease our troubled minds…

Do you know how hard it is to gain one pound of fat?

You would have to eat over 3,500 calories a day just to gain a single pound of fat, and this won’t necessarily mean it even happening in a day but can take up to a week of keeping this up!

Most of what you gain if you dare step on the scale will be water weight. Your body can easily absorb and hold onto a lot of water for a variety of different reasons. Like perhaps; a higher salt intake, consuming a lot of sugar, hormones playing around, or even because of the weather changing! Crazy! (Read more on this here)

It is only water nothing more!

The extra pounds we gain from water can be easily flushed out again, so no need to alarm ourselves. It is nothing permanent. My advice to us; simply avoid the scale and we’ll be fine. Before we know it we will be right where we left off.

Since I never weigh myself either way this one doesn’t apply to me as much, but what I can do is stop mirror checking. Yep, I’m 100% sure my belly will be bloated up like a balloon ready to pop, so no need to examine it daily and dwell on what is only water nothing more!

Eating for a week will not make us lose all the progress we’ve made. We will not gain 30 pounds just from a few days of overeating. We are absolutely allowed to enjoy ourselves! After all, we only live once, right?

Having food is a blessing and one should never feel guilty for having enjoyed it especially now during Christmas time.
