Wildlife of 2023

A small taste of nature

We live in our RV and travel all over America. For the wildlife challenge at Globetrotter’s, I decided to go back through some of my photos and see how much wildlife we really did see this year.

It seems we saw an awful lot of wildlife in Texas. We saw several kinds of birds at the Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge in Corpus Christi, Texas. Brown Pelicans and Mallard Ducks for example.

At the King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas we saw even more wildlife, including deer, Green Jays, Wild Turkeys, and Javelinas.

Javelinas are small wild pigs. I had never heard of them before.

Sandhill Cranes and a Peacock. Photos by author.

We saw several sandhill cranes and even a wild peacock roaming around the property.

I loved watching the snowy egrets fish at the beach behind our camping spot.

Some of the not-so-wild wildlife we saw in Texas included sheep, cattle, and horses. Did you know that the female longhorns have longer horns than the bulls?

Wild Horses and a wild rabbit. Photos by author.

We found some wild horses in the Rio Grande and some wild jackrabbits in the desert.

Bighorn Sheep. Photos by author.

We caught a glimpse of a herd of bighorn sheep in Carlsbad Caverns National Park near the Texas and New Mexico state line.

Oryx. Photo by author.

And we were blessed with a rare sighting of an Oryx in the Guadeloupe Mountains.

I do not claim to be a professional photographer, and can barely call myself an amateur photographer, but I love taking photos.

This is just a small taste of some of the wildlife I caught on camera earlier this year in Texas. Thank you Anne Bonfert for the September Wildlife Challenge.

Keith Peters writes some wonderful nature articles about America. I have enjoyed several of his stories.

And Erie Astin has written a wonderful article about wolves in Montana.

Thanks for reading.
