Summary

The author of the article condemns Will Smith's slap at the Oscars as an act of cowardice, suggesting that Smith's actions were selective and perpetuated negative stereotypes about Black people.

Abstract

The article titled "Wil Smith’s Slap: An Act of Cowardice" critiques Will Smith's actions during the Oscars for being deplorable and cowardly. The author argues that Smith's choice to slap Chris Rock on live television was influenced by the perception that Rock would not retaliate, especially when compared to how Smith might have acted towards someone like Suge Knight or Mike Tyson. The piece highlights that comedians often engage in provocative humor, and while Chris Rock's comment about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head was insensitive, a private conversation could have resolved the issue without public aggression. The author expresses concern that Smith's conduct reinforces harmful stereotypes of Black people as emotionally uncontrolled and savage, which can have broader negative implications for the Black community. Despite Smith's subsequent apology, the author believes the damage has been done.

Wil Smith’s Slap: An Act of Cowardice

Wil Smith actions were deplorable and cowardly. I am sure if Suge Knight or Mike Tyson had made the commentary he would not have been so bolden to slap either of those two on live TV. It always amazes me that people pick on those who they believe will let if go.

Comedians say things — I’m not condoning Chris Rock’s picking on an ailment but almost anything is open season for comedians — we all know that. Wil Smith could have spoken with Chris Rock off camera, explaining the reason for Jada’s shaved head and that the Chris Rock’s infuriated. I’m almost certain Chris would have apologized because he did not know. To make it worse, Wil Smith’s actions go far beyond the slap. It further enforces the stereotype of many people that Black people can’t control their emotions and that we are savages. Black people are not differentiated individually for who we are in society but treated as a collective especially if something negative occurs. Of course, Wil Smith has apologized but the damage is already done.
