Summary

The article discusses why writing platforms may not be paying writers as much as they used to, emphasizing the need for writers to adapt to economic changes, increase productivity, and diversify income streams.

Abstract

The current economic climate, characterized by inflation and higher costs of living, is affecting both individuals and companies. Writing platforms are no exception, with many facing financial constraints that lead to reduced payments to writers. The author argues that companies, like individuals, have bills to pay and may choose to cut costs by lowering writer pay rather than laying off staff. To counteract this, writers are encouraged to manage their time more effectively, produce more content, seek additional income sources, and adapt to the changing economic landscape. The article suggests that these measures are not temporary solutions but necessary strategies for long-term financial stability in an unpredictable economy further complicated by global events such as wars and the integration of A.I. technology.

Opinions

  • The author believes that writing platforms are not obligated to maintain previous pay rates for writers, as they need to manage their own budgets and may prioritize cost-cutting measures like reducing payouts over layoffs.
  • Companies are seen as having the right to set their own rules and manage their budgets, which may include lowering payments to writers.
  • The author defends companies' decisions to reduce writer pay, suggesting that writers should not expect the same level of compensation during economically challenging times.
  • Writers are advised to take personal responsibility for their income by improving productivity, diversifying income streams, and adjusting spending habits.
  • The article suggests that the economy may not improve for years, and writers must continuously adapt and reinvent themselves to survive in the creative industry.
  • The author expresses that the impact of global events, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israeli conflict, along with the rise of A.I., will have significant effects on the economy and the job market

Why Your Writing Platform is Not Paying You Thousands of Dollars

Some critical analysis provides the answer.

Today, we are living in interesting times. You are probably feeling it, too.

But when it comes to the platform you write for, you think nothing of it. You expect to be paid like you were before.

Let me say first off, this is my guess and it’s likely happening.

You see, I read and watch a lot of stories on the economy. I am not an economist nor have I taken high-level classes on this, but I do consume a lot of information.

Ask my wife, and she’ll tell you about the closet with thousands of magazines and books sitting on shelves in the closet or my two bookcases of books. Most of these are on money or business.

With the economy cooling off, prices are still high. You feel it in your wallet, purse, or your bank account.

It’s not as intense as it was a year ago. I could be wrong, but it’s more likely right. I know because I see it.

Sure, stocks have come back a bit, but the everyday consumer still sees higher prices at the grocery store, restaurants, and even airplane fees. Your utility bill has gone up instead of down.

As you have higher bills and less money, it’s probably the same for companies. Companies continue to lay off hundreds or thousands of people.

Their utility bills probably haven’t gone down. Just like you, their bills are higher. Why would they get a discount in times like this?

Then all the money people saved up is disappearing and credit card balances are increasing.

The other week, I got into a heated discussion with writers complaining about their pay. I actually defended the company and said they don’t owe writers anything.

Of course, I didn’t mention any details like I have here. You see, companies are just like people. They have bills to pay as well.

Instead of laying people off, they are just lowering your pay. They have every right to since they determine the rules and have their own budget to manage.

Unless you work for yourself, companies can do as they please. They control your paycheck.

One way you can beat the system

As a creator, you have to manage your time better. Yes, you may be giving it 100%, but today, that’s not good enough. You need to do more with the same amount of time you have.

It’s time to take your work up another level. There is no quick fix and you won’t get an answer from the company to solve your money problems.

But there are some solutions you need to seriously consider.

5 Things you must do

1. you need to do more

2. you need to add another stream of income

3. you need to change your habits and spend less, so you have more money to spend or invest

4. be more creative with your output to gain more followers

5. this won’t be a one-time thing; the economy could get worse and not get better for years so continue to follow this process

You need to reinvent yourself.

This means you need to grow and get out of your comfort zone. I hate to say it, but your current routine is not doing it. The world is changing fast.

You got through Covid-19… The initial days of inflation… The Russia-Ukraine war is not slowing down.

Now, the Israeli war just shocked the world.

This new factor could cause prices to increase, but you’ll have to be prepared for the domino effects of this event. No one knows what the fallout could be.

The world has not experienced these events all at once. But that’s not all…

Then you have A.I. which is trying to make a place in the world that will happen in one way or another.

Just as A.I. came in, we have barely seen the full effects of this materialize and make its full presence known. This will possibly be years in the making.

Companies will take advantage of this and add more A.I. than people who will become collateral damage.

This is all about a company’s bottom line.

You see, companies owe you nothing.

If you haven’t observed, this is a process where people have become the victims.

- How many companies pay a pension today?

- Have you noticed more workers are hired as contractors than employees?

- Why are companies providing fewer health benefits?

And more companies are hiring part-time than full-time employees. Some even work as contractors cutting benefits companies once paid.

Then minimum wage has barely moved over the past three decades, and some companies still pay workers nothing.

This list could go on.

The process of pay will be challenging for years to come. Pay will not be as easy as people think they deserve.

Getting paid will be harder to come by. You need to be more creative to earn a living. Branching out into new fields may be a requirement to make it in the future.

The days of getting a paycheck will become more difficult. If you want to be a creator, you better get used to change.

You’re going to see a lot of it as long as you’re in this space.
