Why You Shouldn’t Listen to Popular Writers on How to be Successful on Medium

Their experiences are biased.

Since starting writing on Medium, I’ve seen a lot of articles and even videos on YouTube targeted towards new writers.

“Do THESE SIMPLE STEPS to be successful like me!”

“I wrote for 30 days on Medium and gained 10k followers. This is how you can too!”

“I started writing on Medium and gained $2k in a week!”

Okay, I may have exaggerated a bit, but my point is still the same. There are a lot of really successful people who write articles to “help” new writers be successful too. But do they actually help them?

Successful Writers’ Experiences are Biased

Few people will make thousands of dollars each month writing on Medium. Some of it’s talent, some is hard work, and some is just plain luck, but really successful writers are part of a lucky few. The only reason you see their articles is because they’re popular writers.

So before you spend hours a day studying what other people have done to become thriving writers, instead spend that time writing and working to create articles that people will want to read. It doesn’t matter what other people’s secrets are as long as you meet your goal.

“How to become a popular writer” is a popular topic on Medium

While I’m sure they actually do want to help new writers, it’s also true that there are a lot of writers who will want to read their tips. It’s a convenient way to get lots of clicks and claps. And that’s how you make money on Medium.

As a new writer, you don’t want money to be your reasoning behind writing. Sure, you may want writing to be your career, but frame your mindset around enjoying writing and making your content entertaining for your audience, not how to maximize the amount of money you make.

Conclusion

Learn from what other writers have done, but spend more time perfecting your own articles and brand. Your readers won’t care how many “How to earn $1k a week on Medium!” videos on YouTube you’ve watched, they only want to read quality content.

Here are some of the main things that I hope you takeaway from this article:

  1. Write, write, write. The only way that you’re going to create better content is by practicing.
  2. Learn from other writers. They will tell you mistakes they’ve made and what has worked for them, but it is more worth your time learning what works for you.
  3. Enjoy writing. Don’t focus on maximizing your profits from each article you write, instead try to make your audience enjoy reading your content. Then, money will follow.
