Why You Should Write on NewsBreak
I know the last thing you probably want right now is another platform to write on but trust me on this one
Disclaimer: If you use any of the links in this post, I may receive a small commission from NewsBreak. More information on that is below. Thank you!
Even if you write for the love of it, you probably need to make an income somehow.
I think that the NewsBreak app, very seriously, is a platform for all writers and one where all writers can receive payment.
I am fairly new to writing on NewsBreak, but even in the small amount of time that I have been publishing over there (and the even smaller amount of time that I have been approved for monetization) I have been extremely impressed.
What Is NewsBreak
I hadn’t heard of the app myself until I was searching for platforms to write on and publications to pitch to.
Simply put: it’s a news app.
There are media networks, journalists, and community contributors that write and post about the news.
‘The news’ is a really broad term. If you poke around on the app, you will see that the topics vary widely and it hosts very engaged readers.
Writing Vibes
I love that Newsbreak makes it possible for anyone to write about what is happening in their community and share primary sources for the stories and issues that impact them and their families the most.
It’s somewhat of an equalizer for some writers who feel like they have a difficult time getting their articles into traditional publications and other popular platforms online. No story is too small on Newsbreak, since community voices are sought-after.
The minimum word count is extremely small, just 250 words, so it is easy to commit to one post a day to test it out.
The requirements for monetization are fairly easy to hit and you get commission payments for referring others to download the app or apply to be contributors.
It is free to download and use for readers and writers alike.
Local Engagement
NewsBreak prioritizes local news stories. This is something that the platform has explicitly stated and something I can attest to with my experience publishing there.
What is considered ‘local’ seems to be city, county, zip code, or state specific regions. My experience has been that nationwide posts perform poorly by comparison to state and city specific counterparts.
In some ways, this model makes it possible for you to be rewarded financially for simply being an active member of your own community and talking about it.
Something that you are probably doing already- for free. If you aren’t involved in your community, this could be seen as somewhat of a motivator for you to get started.
This is also beneficial to anyone who is trying to gain a local or regional following before book tours or other events, publications, promotions, launches., etc.
Harsh Words
I will warn you now… the comments on NewsBreak are absolutely wild.
People do not hold back, they sometimes hide behind screen names and say extremely offensive and even abusive things to the author, each other, and to the public in general.
You can turn comments on or off as well as a fun third option where only your followers can comment. You can also respond to comments or delete them.
I’ve used all of these options and like them for different reasons. I
There are supportive comments, too! Of course. But know that there are a surprising amount of people willing to be pretty rude in the comments of this app.
Try It Out or Get Started
If you are curious about what the app itself is like and read some stories there to check out the vibe and what is being posted in your area, you can use this link to download it for free.
If you are interested in becoming a contributor on NewsBreak and eventually (quickly, probably) qualifying and applying for monetization, you can use this link.
Build Each Other Up
On brand with the type of comments that I have read on NewsBreak, I have noticed a lack of community that I enjoy on other platforms.
Here on Medium, I really like that it is easy to build relationships with other writers and support each other.
If there is a community for that for NewsBreak writers, I haven’t found it yet and would love to.
If You Build It…
I also considered putting together a quick challenge for the remaining weeks of December to prepare for a bigger January 2024 NewsBreak writing challenge.
I already have a drafted list of post challenges and themes that a group could do together in order to hit the minimum requirements to apply for monetization. I thought it would be nice to encourage one and another, especially for those who may be new to this type of writing.
Your Thoughts?
I am really curious in what others are thinking about NewsBreak, making money on that platform, and the possibility of creating a small and casual ‘challenge’.
What are your thoughts? Or questions?
