5-MINUTE TV SHOW REVIEW

Why You Should Watch “The King: Eternal Monarch”

Rating: 9/10

Photo by Bundo Kim on Unsplash

Synopsis/idea: There’s an alternate universe to South Korea where the Joseon line doesn’t end and they continue to have an emperor (who is handsome and also the male lead); his evil uncle steals the Manpasikjeok (a magical flute) … dun dun dun!

Why I started watching this show

The first Korean drama I watched on my own featured actor Lee Min Ho, and I’ve been following his new work ever since. I also saw nothing short of a million stills of him on a white horse* and let’s be real, I immediately subscribed to all updates after that.

*This is the Asian conceptual equivalent of “Knight in Shining Armour” (i.e., a prince on a white horse).

Three (3) reasons why I recommend this show

[#1] Time travel & doppelgangers

There’s a special spot in my heart for time travel and alternate universe narratives because plots have to be an extra layer of intricate. Plot points you see early in a show might come back and be a key to future narratives and that alone is so exciting to me.

[#2] Kdrama Food Spreads (and other aesthetics)

The cinematography in this show is incredible. Not only do we get gorgeous shots of the palace, for a show that’s not centred around food, it has a surprising number of amazing food shots. Half of them are sponsored by the fried chicken place Lee Min Ho represents, but I’m down, I’m down.

[#3] Jokes and Banter

Sure, a lot of korean dramas revolve around a central romantic plot, but my metric for how I know the writing is good in a kdrama is when there are hilarious non-romantic moments too.

One (1) thing I wish they did better

Given that the story is centred around time travel and alternate universes, there are a few areas where there are clear plotholes that weren’t tied up. It’s not as loophole-proof as a show like Dark, but I let it slide given the 1287263 shots of delicious food and satisfying ending.
