5-MINUTE TV SHOW REVIEW

Why You Should Watch “Crash Landing on You”

Rating: 9/10

Photo by Nicolas Tissot on Unsplash

Synopsis/idea: Korean Drama. A rich self-made fashion CEO was parachuting one day during a sudden storm and accidentally ended up in North Korea.

Why I started watching this show

Crash Landing on You, nicknamed CLOY, actually trended on Twitter and Instagram and the snippets of spoilers got me interested in the show. The fact that the setting is in North Korea was also intriguing.

Three (3) reasons why I recommend this show

[#1] Sassy Characters

Son Yejin (female lead) is the sassiest, strongest, empowering entrepreneur ever, and her dynamic with Ri Jeong Hyeok (male lead) is one of the most iconic on-screen relationships of 2020.

[#2] Second-Lead Romances that Break Your Heart

You know a Korean drama is good when the second-lead romance rips open your heart — Alberto Gu & Seo Dan follow a will they, won’t they relationship that makes you think that they’re meant to be together, forever. The question is, will they be?

[#3] Well-Researched Depictions of North Korea

We often about North Korea a lot through a North American lens, which I personally try to take with a grain of salt. Know that this Korean drama made sure to include research and consultation from individuals from North Korea, including Kang Nara, who defected from North Korea a few years ago. She finds that the drama is really realistic, especially in village that was built as a set for filming.

One (1) thing I wish they did better

Korean dramas are often 60 to 90 minutes long, which rivals the duration of a short movie. I’m not sure what distinguished between this format, but a few other Korean dramas release two 30–45 minute episodes per “timeslot” rather than one 60–90 minute long episode, which I think might have served this story better.
