Why You Should Tweet Your Stories

Using simple marketing tools means your words reach a wider audience.

Have you ever heard a bush full of sparrows twittering? The noise is equivalent to a bar full of merry drinkers all raising their voices to be heard.

A sparrow’s chirps attract a mate during breeding season as well as letting other sparrows know where they are. A lone sparrow chirps to announce their presence to engage other sparrows. Richard Mudhar recorded different sparrows chirping and shares them here.

I am often drawn to a hedge or a shrub where they chirp away. It’s a bit like a game of what’s the time Mr Wolf where you have to freeze when the wolf looks round. With sparrows, if you get too close, they stop singing. Back up a few paces, give them a few seconds and, as one, they start up again!

If you haven’t used Twitter yet, I recommend you do, pretty darn quick.

I’ve had a Twitter account for years but didn’t make much use of it until March 2020. Here’s my handle. https://twitter.com/wrtwrds

Twitter is the easiest marketing tool to use. All you have to do is link your Medium account to your Twitter account using the tools Medium gives you.

Allow me to demonstrate.

Select settings from the drop down list found by clicking on your profile picture.

Click on Connections to the left of the screen or scroll down.

As you can see, I’m already connected.

My profile includes a link to my Twitter account.

If you’d like more in depth instructions you can find them here.

Like sparrows who need to let each other know what they are doing or share valuable information about new arrivals with their flock, writers also need to advertise their latest story with other communities.

You won’t immediately get fans flocking to your work but you’ll build a following. Before you know it, twelve months will have passed. When I Google my name the whole first page is full of my profiles on Medium, FaceBook, Linked In, and YouTube.

If you Google wrtwrds, you’ll see:

Again you don’t get this overnight, it takes time for SEO to do its thing. But the more you feed into your various accounts the bigger the return.

For your voice to be heard you will need to Tweet often to attract and engage your audience. Just like the sparrows who are excellent at announcing themselves.

May the reTweets be with you.
