Why You Should Stop Complaining About Medium Income and Traffic
Knowing the original intention of Medium can help you level up
“My traffic is going down. No one is reading my articles anymore. I can’t make a reliable source of income from Medium.”
Every one in fifty posts I read these days seems to be complaining about how Medium isn’t good anymore, not giving you enough traffic, and not paying enough.
It’s easy to get swept up into the Medium sucks hoopla and listen to sound of the drum that some of the “top writers” are beating. We want to believe that Medium is screwing us over by messing with the algorithms, our traffic and our money.
If you’re “so done” with Medium, let me offer this thought for your consideration. I know that you may have thought that Medium was the thing that was going to pay you monthly for the work you love doing. Medium never promised us this but let’s say you bought into the idea that was the intention of Medium.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I would like to offer you the reason and intention for the creation of the Medium platform. I looked through some old posts by the founder Ev Williams and here’s what he said Medium was about.
“ You need a place to start. So our goal is to help people pay attention to the most valuable stuff first and to have the best ideas win.” Ev Williams
In one of his posts from 2012, Williams wrote that the information on the internet is saturated so we need a platform to help organize the information. We need a place for people to start contemplating ideas and giving attention to the most valuable ideas. Medium is about allowing the best ideas to win.
In fact, if you go to the current Medium about page, you’ll find this is what Medium’s about:
“Our purpose is to spread these ideas and deepen understanding of the world.”
What does this mean for your bank account?
I don’t necessarily believe that everyone’s earnings and traffic are decreasing. For many of the writers I know, their incomes are going up every month. Some are making thousands of dollars in their first months but the question to be asking isn’t how to make more money on Medium.
If you start with the question of how to monetize medium, you’ve already lost. The real question you need to ask is what interesting ideas, personal stories and insights are you sharing with the Medium community?
If the best ideas and stories are what win on Medium, let me humbly suggest that you work on improving the quality of the stories and ideas. Writing trite morning routine posts or how to create habits posts are, sorry to say, boring and over-done. You’re not introducing anything new to the conversation.
You don’t just get traffic, followers, and income for putting in the effort. Simply writing stuff on Medium isn’t not going to push the needle. Some of the successful writers I’m following around here are writing unique content about their lives, their struggles, and their unique perspectives. Other writers are writing in interesting niches, with interesting writing styles, and with fascinating insights. Some write with sarcasm, others with humor and others with vulnerability.
You have to bring something new, interesting OR different to the table. You have to bring a unique voice, unique ideas or unique topics. Remember, it’s the best ideas that win. Medium is simply a platform to get your ideas out and they’ve decided to reward writers with what readers think are the best ideas. Medium never promised you a single thing for producing content. You don’t get paid for simply doing the work.
How do you get Medium to work for you?
You’ve got to say something new, say it with some personality, or say it with some insight. You’ve got to bring something new to the table to capture your reader’s attention. You’ve got to get people to read your stuff. To get people to read your stuff, you have to make it interesting to read.
You’re likely binging on Neflix these days like many people are. What does your favorite Korean drama, Netflix’s most-watched movies, and most popular serials have to teach you? Interesting characters, interesting plots and interesting stories win the day. You’re not going to watch something that puts you to sleep but that moves you, intrigues you or captures your attention.
You’re going to binge watch the best ideas, concepts, dialogue, and stories. It’s not even enough if the people on camera look good. If the story is boring, you’re going to turn on something else. You’re not going to wait for weeks to do it either. Hate a show today and you’re immediately browsing the contents to look for something more interesting.
You’ve got to apply the same thinking as a writer. A boring list post is not going to cut. Trite personal development advice might have worked in 2010 but not in 2021. Stories without personality, vulnerability or readability aren’t going to be read.
You get Medium to work for you by writing more thought-provoking, more interesting and more unique content. If you focus on writing more quality content that interests people, your income and traffic will sky-rocket.
Remember that Medium isn’t looking for any old idea that has been shared thousands of times on the internet. It’s looking for the best ideas in the world.
So to step up your game, offer insights no one else does, offer a new way of thinking or offer a unique perspective or story. Write about things not many others are writing about. Stay away from morning routines and habits unless you can genuinely offer something new and unique to the conversation. In fact, tell people to screw their morning routines or stop starting new habits and you’ve got something of interest in your hands.
This may sound a bit harsh but I offer it with much love and encouragement:
What if it’s not your earnings and traffic that are going down the tubes but your inspiration and creativity? What if you’re opting for the mundane and the safe instead of the risky, vulnerable, and provocative?
Think about it, reflect on it and feel free to give me a piece of your mind in the comments below. Or better yet, give us all a piece of your mind in the next Medium post you write :)
