Why You Should Make Your Headline Sexy And Cool

Our headlines need to be the delicious cherry on the icing

“If you can’t say your title in one breath, it’s probably too long.” — Sam Horn, author of POP!

One of the many assignments covered in my freelance journalism course entailed creating headlines, subheadings, and intro paragraphs to hook in and entice potential readers. Happily, for me, I passed this assignment and the entire course. No idea how I did it!

Anyhow, despite this, I am still getting to grips with not only conjuring up fabulous story ideas but working out the necessary punchy headlines. It’s got to get easier, right?

When we are new writers it feels a lot like passing your driving test. During the year or so after we pass, there are too many to think of embarrassing mistakes, yet over time, we become competent drivers. Well most of us. So I have humbly accepted it’s perfectly okay to make writing errors, nonetheless, I do sense I am overthinking my headlines. Or am I?

It’s like those days or hours, you spend planning an outfit for an important occasion only to wear entirely the wrong accessory or hat on the day. It completely ruins the image intended. I marry this similar intention to our article content and its headline.

And to be honest, despite this headache, I am enjoying simply unloading deep stuff on here regardless of the unorthodox boundaries. It’s healing and cathartic. I haven’t worked up the courage to pitch to a print editor, as of yet, and so I may as well enjoy the practice Medium gives me.

But back to the importance of powerful headlines. We are spoilt for choice in the enormity of publications posted daily. And reading many of your articles I can surmise that the lack of an article being acknowledged and appreciated is the bane for many writers. Suffice it to say, a complete conundrum on any given day.

So I am sharing this link to a free SEO analyser I have been using to polish up my knowledge of the power of SEO: uncommon, emotion, and power words, that need to be thought through — which will enable your story to glow like a nuclear power station. Therefore, capturing your audience’s heart. Bingo.

We have to be aware that without some sort of creative methodology, we are working against having approximately three seconds to grab a reader’s attention — being that the internet is awash with an endless white noise of information.

It’s currently estimated that 328.77 million terabytes of data are created daily. That is 1000 gigabytes to a terabyte; An astonishing amount of information is generated daily.

Now you can see why you need a sexy hook to grab attention for your worthy post. You have worked tirelessly and put your heart into it — so it deserves to be read.

Eye-catching headlines can be creatively fun. Here are 10 pointers if you struggle, as I do, with writing that perfect headline.

1. Your headline should include a promise that can be delivered.

2. It should hold value.

3. Understanding who you are targeting and who your reader is will be beneficial as it resonates more directly.

4. Tell the reader why they should invest in reading your article.

5. Be clear and concise, and just get to the point.

6. Think about what the reader will get out of the article.

7. Numbers can also be catchy, if relevant, as readers like these takeaways.

8. Contemplate a compelling summary with your audience in mind

9. Avoid jargon and use words that you would use in a casual conversation

10. Think about Who, What, Why, When, Where, and How

I wasn’t planning on writing this piece because I’m no expert in crafting catchy headlines or SEO. Nonetheless, I have this habit of editing my headlines and republishing. I have no idea if Medium notifies these constant updates as new emails for the same article; so I’m feeling embarrassed. That’s my inner critic. But does it matter what readers think of me? Mostly a NO, because I want to stay true to myself. I am new at this and making lots of mistakes and I am cool with that. However, the pressure in having my article, up there, published, is helping me learn more about editing and making my content tight; even if that means showing the warts and all in the process.

Thank you for bearing with me and taking the time to read my article.
