Why You Should Be Using Pinterest if You’re a Writer
Get thousands of monthly viewers in just a few steps

Pinterest is not only a social media platform, but a search engine too.
With over 300 million monthly active users, Pinterest is a worthwhile platform to find new readers.
Even in weeks where I’m not actively posting (like the screenshot below), I still get thousands of monthly viewers and hundreds of clicks.
In fact, after just a couple weeks of using Pinterest, I averaged 20k+ monthly viewers.

As you read these tips and consider adding Pinterest to your current social platforms, keep your target audience in mind. The platform is heavily skewed by gender, with roughly 79.5% of U.S. Pinterest users being female.
If you want to attract more readers and clicks to your blog, website, or Medium articles, Pinterest is a great way to go.
Here are 3 easy ways to use Pinterest as a writer.
Share quotes from your books or blogs
The “Quotes” category is in the top 7 Pinterest categories.
This is why Pinterest is such a great platform for writers. If there’s one thing we have a lot of, it’s quotes.
When you write a new blog post, short story, or poem, collect a couple of the best quotes and make them into nice-looking “Pins” to share on Pinterest.
Here is an example of a quote I made in just a couple minutes:

I used Canva to make this. You can learn more about how I use Canva here:
Use keywords strategically
Now that you’ve gathered some quotes and created images to pin, it’s time to post them to your Pinterest account.
Since Pinterest is a search engine, keywords are essential to getting your post in front of many people.
When you create a new Pin, you have the ability to add a title, description, and website.

The title should be something attention-grabbing, like the headline of your article, or a sale you’re running on a book.
But the description is where the magic happens. You have a 500 character limit to make your keywords count.
Similar to how you would use hashtags on Instagram, you want to use the description section for keywords related to your writing.
I am a poet and freelance writer whose goal is to sell my poetry books and get more blog readers. Some examples of keywords I frequently use are: motivational quotes, inspirational poetry, poetry books for women, social media for writers, writing tips, social media tips.
You get the idea.
Come up with a few lists of keywords based on the various topics you write about so you have a starting point for each pin.
Create a board (or boards) for your blog posts
But don’t call the board “My Blog Posts.” You want something that will attract readers.
For example, I have a board called “Writing and Social Media Tips” where I share my latest blog posts.
Since users can choose to follow all of your boards, or just individual ones, you may want to create multiple boards covering the various topics you write about.

For each blog post, create multiple pins with different images so more users will have the chance to find it.
Pinterest is an amazing search engine for finding readers looking for quotes, books, and tips. As a writer, you should try out this platform.
