Why You Should Avoid Using AI on Medium

AI tools can be great, but don’t let them do all of the work.

Using AI can help you find new writing ideas, create outlines, check your grammar, and more. While AI is an amazing tool, it shouldn’t be used to fully generate articles on Medium or anywhere else.

These copy-and-paste AI articles are easy for anyone to detect, and nearly all of them receive little to no engagement. I do know of one author who is an exception to the rule, but I’m going to be nice and not single anyone out.

If you still need convincing, here are a few reasons why you should think twice before using AI to copy and paste whatever it generates from a prompt.

Against the Terms of Service

Medium isn’t against the use of AI if you include a disclosure at the beginning of an article. I’ve created a few horror poems/stories with AI and I include a disclosure to stay in compliance. I don’t want to insult my audience because most people don’t want to read any AI content.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of AI content on Medium doesn’t include any disclosure and I see it all of the time while editing. Not disclosing the use of AI runs the risk of getting your account suspended by Medium. It’s never a risk worth taking.

Lack of Soul

Nearly all of AI writing is dry and lifeless. It’s great at providing information, but it will also put your readers to sleep. You can experiment with different tones, but it still sounds unnatural unless you plan to do a lot of editing.

The better option is to write using your own brain. You might make a few mistakes and your grammar may not be perfect, but that’s fine. It’s much easier to connect with your audience and make lifelong friends if you write your own articles.

Not Worth the Effort

Creating an article in the span of 30 seconds sounds productive until you realize that you will be lucky to make a few cents. I’ve looked at the stats from different articles on various publications and the engagement is nearly always poor.

Sitting down behind a keyboard and writing an article for 45 minutes to an hour is much more productive, and you are likely to earn more money. No one should expect to get rich on Medium, but you can still make a little income if you spend time writing yourself.

Insults the Intelligence of Your Readers

Most people can recognize AI content, especially if you’ve been on Medium for a while. AI writing tends to use the same style and phrases again and again. I can only handle so many articles with tapestry, moreover, and in the world of before I begin to lose my mind.

If you want to succeed on Medium, it’s important to put in the work and quit looking for shortcuts. Using AI to write an entire article seems like a quick way to make money, but it’s a massive waste of time. The sooner you learn this lesson the better off you will be.
