Why You Ought To Live

It can bring you peace to know that most wouldn’t notice if you were gone.

When we are born or where we born are things not under our control but the knowledge that at any given point, we can choose to exit and what many ways there are to exit gives one a dizzying sense of power over a life which we have close to no power over.

I have slipped away so much year after year and parts of me have died in ways I did not have the foresight to anticipate. I couldn’t reclaim those parts of myself again.

Others not only didn’t help but they also rarely noticed.

Nobody misses anybody except that we miss the purpose they fulfilled in our life and no sooner is that purpose fulfilled by another that the mourning period is also over.

People would rather you endure silently and they are ignorant to any calamity that strikes the ground even a millimetre away from where they stand. They relish in the misfortune of others because of the fact that they were unharmed in the only fortune they possess.

Psychology calls it the “Just World Hypothesis” which means people believe:

  • the world is essentially a fair and orderly place
  • all good actions are eventually rewarded
  • all evil actions are eventually punished
  • misery is not just due to luck or chance

Therefore:

  • they are in a good place because they must have earned it
  • others suffer because they must deserve it

Thus, ill fate is unforgiving to both: those who are cursed with it and those who try to stand by and love such men.

It shouldn’t then be depressing however to recognize the worthlessness of your life or death in the grand scheme of things: whether you are an artist, a scientist, someone of great value to humanity or just a statistic. It should instead be empowering to know how little you should consider what the world requires of you in order to truly exist.

To have your name go down in history has little to do with if your demons had someone else to gnaw on other than you in the dark.

That is, whether someone else was willing to offer a bit of themselves to the evil that our minds are, to save a little bit of you.

But people seldom dare to be sacrificial to save another: not with their time, their words or by offering things that can only be offered and never asked for.

Then there could also be that our actions and our lives are inconsequential because we are bound on existing as such.

We attach the least value to those who value us the most because we are diseased individuals. We would rather exist as lifeless mantle pieces and stew in the foreign narrative in the head of someone we think we care deeply about: and that becomes the value of our existence.

We are happy as china stocked away for special occasions, voiceless spectators in a home that only has what our childhood home was missing. We do not care to possess the status of co-authorship we so deeply need in friendships and relationships and sign off entire lives to someone else.

After all, all that makes existence so delicious is the fact that one day it will dissolve on the tip of our tongues, followed by even the nostalgia of it.

The end of life provides fodder for deeper contemplation than life itself does.

The lengths we go to reaffirm that we exist or matter or to feel alive cannot defy eternity. The reason we know these feelings in the first place is that at some point, we have all felt the opposite end of the spectrum.

So I wonder, what it is that really keeps people around. To take control can be a dizzying prospect when nothing else seems in our hands. Maybe we are all aware of that on some subconscious level.

The world is Jonestown and us fragile, easy gullible things are sipping love, religion, vanity and materialism like Kool-Aid. But we can choose to discard the drink. We can choose to disbelieve and question the things that seemingly lay foundation to our very existence.

We are only as vulnerable as we make ourselves by giving external forces power over us. The world may choose whether or not you eat today but the world cannot tell you how to feel.

The objective reality of things might be interspersed with our subjectivity of this world but we can decide the extent of it if we put our foot down.

Not to downplay true suffering and bad luck and how they change a man. But on your worst days, you are the only friend you can truly rely on. The world will only kick you more when you are already down on your luck.

So decide what parts of it you let in.

We all know the friends, the family and the aspects of our life that aren’t as kind to us as we would like for them to be. Be hyper-aware of them on the tough days.

Exterminate them from your life if they are the front-seat drivers to your 3 am suicidal thoughts and self-destructive tendencies.

In situations where you are completely at the mercy of others and have no choice but to co-exist in the same environments then hold on because we all have our own cup to drink from. There are multitudes of very gratifying propositions life puts in front of us with very bitter endings: they have their monsters though they might be yours.

Freeing yourself from a person might be easier than freeing yourself from their long-lasting effects on your psyche but at least that is still good news for your present dilemma.

Ultimately, we are weak because we are human and we chase things to fill voids that we have never had to confront in ourselves. By holding on, we give ourselves the opportunity that the world seldom granted us.

We give ourselves a fighting chance instead of putting arbitrary deadlines on our hopes and expectations of this life.

Ultimately, we hold power over much more than just tailoring and cutting short eternity to better fit our narrative. If only we decide to just hold on.
