Why You Need to Read More

“Not All Readers Are Leaders, But All Leaders Are Readers.” — Harry S. Truman

Reading is, without dispute, the best way to get started down the road to financial literacy.

Reading requires the individual to carve out time to stop what they are doing and focus on the information in front of them. Reading expands your vocabulary and deposits valuable information straight into your brain.

Most importantly for financial literacy, the author tells you all the mistakes they have made SO THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPEAT THOSE MISTAKES.

How valuable is your time? Let us say you trade 10 minutes a day, every day, to read a 250-page book. For somebody that can read 1 page per minute, that is about 4 hours to finish the book.

At the end of 4 hours of consuming all the mistakes, successes, and wisdom of somebody successful enough to write a book on finance, how many years of your own life has that saved you?

Multiply those lessons across the number of books you have consumed and you will be able to stand on the shoulders of giants.

Now, whose shoulders should we stand on first?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of well-written books on every aspect of personal finance.

Although there are thousands of books to choose from, I like to stick with the heavy hitters, the books that come highly recommended by the big names in the personal finance world.

(Leave a comment with a book that changed how you think about money!)

Here are a few of the most referenced books from across the internet and personal finance books:

1) Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

2) The Richest Man in Babylon by George Samuel Clawson

3) Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

4) The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J Stanley

Starting with any one of these books will give you the vocabulary to break into the world of financial literacy.

Reading to be a leader does not have to revolve solely around books on financial literacy. I was amazed when I picked up a copy of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, to find that it is recommended by Bill Gates and Barack Obama!

But it all makes sense, to know history is to make sure you do not repeat history. To be a leader we need to know the past in order to find the best way forward.

Knowing history will give you a broad perspective so that you are not surprised by the cycles that shape our world. History can prepare you for learning the cyclical nature of the markets in stocks and real estate.

What if we want to consume more information but we cannot spend the day reading? That is where podcasts come in.

Podcasts are easy to consume as we can habit-stack listening to episodes with our daily commute or our exercise routine.

Not all podcasts are created equally, or for everybody. Depending on what your specific interest is in the world of finance and business, you will be sure to find multiple high-quality creators.

To get you started, here are a few of the podcasts that I enjoy:

-Smart Passive Income by Pat Flynn (my current favorite, entrepreneurship focused)

-So Money by Farnoosh Torabi (personal finance focused)

-Entrepreneurs on Fire by John Lee Dumas (short and daily!)

-Yo Quiero Dinero by Jannese Torres (mixed personal finance and entrepreneurship)

-Bigger Pockets by Brandon Turner (The older episodes from 2013 have amazing educational material on real estate)

After taking in all the education and wisdom that you can handle, it is time to put what you have learned in to practice.

If we look at the Learning Pyramid (below), we can see that we only retain 10% of what we read and 5% of what we listen to. In order to really understand personal finance, we need to put it all into practice for a 75% retention rate!

After you have sorted through your own mistakes, then its time to teach others what you have learned. You will benefit by retaining 90% of what you teach. All that knowledge is pure profit in the knowledge bank, and possibly, actual cash in your pocket!
