Why You Need to Make a Change in Your Life Right Now

Before it’s too late.

A few days ago, my sister told me she got into a graduate school in New York. She’s a real foreign language fanatic and she never stops watching shows in Italian, so this was a great opportunity for her.

Previously, she went to college at the same university I’m going to now. We’re only two years apart so we’ve definitely spent some time together there. Heck, we even lived in the same dorm together.

She’s been there for four crucial years of her life. Not just academic years, but drastic up and down years. We went to protests together, Beyonce concerts together, we even dabbled in aimlessly riding the campus bus late at night together. It seems as though she just got the hang of navigating the campus yesterday. So in a brief conversation with her, I asked, “are you going to miss it”?

Her response — “No”.

That one-word response reminded me of a valuable lesson about change that no one should forget.

It’s so hard for people to change something in their lives.

I get annoyed if I have to change my Twitter password, imagine how I’d be if I had to make a serious change in my life — Not fun at all.

It’s the same as me arguing with some dudes online about who the best rapper is right now. We can agree to disagree as it’s very evident neither of us are going to change our minds on that.

But your own self-improvement and happiness is something we can’t agree to disagree on.

Amid all the turmoil going on in the world right now, I’m seeing a slow yet steady influx of white people and even other people of color to change how they think when it comes to racism.

Back in the day, as sad as it was, people could agree to disagree on that topic. Like it’s okay to be racist. Now it’s not enough to be complacent in white supremacy, you have to be actively anti-racist.

From that example, you can tell that people are slow to make changes in their lives because it requires work. That’s what all of this comes down to — laziness.

The same inputs yield the same outputs.

Do you really wanna catch yourself in five years in the same place you are now?

It’s funny because every time I think about change, I think about my crappy movie theater job. That job is mainly for 16-year-olds living off of their parents, yet most of the people I worked with were at least 23 years old.

That’s no shame to the people who still work there because people have to do what they have do. But those people who are 23 years old were the main ones starting drama like high school students when the actual high school students just wanted to do their job and go home.

There’s a big difference in the attitude of people who actually want to make substantial changes in their lives and people who’ve already given up.

However, you can’t blame those people.

They want to be comfortable and we all love that. Just think to yourself, why am I still in the same place I was before?

Is it because of something I can’t control or is it because I’m doing the same thing that got me here in the first place?

You need to make a change because you can’t let yourself down.

Here are a few changes I’ve made about my life that have helped me tremendously:

  • I started waking up at 5:30 am
  • I started writing every day
  • I started eating more fruits and vegetables
  • I started going to the gym
  • I started studying in the morning

All of these changes have helped my life tremendously and you know what? None of these changes were planned. I just decided to do them because I hated how I felt before.

That’s how a change should be. If your action are harmful to you or another group of people, you should try and make a change.

After I implemented those changes, I’m happier. I have a better outlook on life. I’m losing weight. I’m less stressed because I write my thoughts out every day. I’m also not a negative Nancy anymore and hey, I’ll take that any day.

I decided to change because I didn’t want to let myself down in this marathon called life. I didn’t want to take a time-out towards reaching my goals.

Final Thoughts

Most people are willing to stay in that same hole to the extent of living unhappy lives.

I know you don’t want to be that person.

It’s scary sometimes. Trust me, I get it more than ever. But it’s self-awareness time.

Is your current situation working for you? Are you getting the same results that continue to make you unhappy?

Then it’s time for a change. Change takes work, it’s not like we all can wake up one day and make those drastic changes we’ve always wanted. That’s like telling an alcoholic to stop drinking tomorrow, it just won’t happen.

We all have to take baby steps to make that substantial change we want, and when you do make that change, tell me what you miss about your old situation.

As my sister once said, “absolutely nothing”.
