Why You Need To Live Each Day As Though It’s The Last

Tips for better health and life

Everyone will grow old sometime. It’s a fact. Some may live a long time. I happen to have a family member who is living a long time. But a recent health scare got me thinking about the day she needs to leave this earth. It will be a difficult time, and this article hopes to help people appreciate each other because truth be told, we don’t know when our time or their times are up.

How do we make each moment and second count? How do we create memories? I think these questions are tough to answer, but it seems obvious to me that being available is important.

To me, I think it’s important to be present with my loved ones, in sickness or health. At the moment, my mom is doing great but life is very changeable and we are not its captain during health issues — I feel it is important to treasure every moment. She had spent many days in the hospital in which she was barely conscious, and surviving on IV fluids. Even in those dark days, I held her hands, hoping that she would feel my touch and know that she was not alone. It must have worked, and each day that passed, she stayed conscious longer. Finally, she was off the IVR and taking real food!

It took almost 2 weeks for her to gradually reach full consciousness, but even this was a miracle. The doctor had given some worst-case scenarios, that thankfully never happened. During this time, some family members took it hard and refused to eat, or were overcome by depression. I took time off from work because I felt it was in my mom’s interest to have me nearby. A snowstorm prevented me from digging my car out of the parking lot, but fortunately, Uber drivers were available to take me to the hospital. A miracle!

Myself — -I was always positive and prayed to the Almighty for a breakthrough. I even sent a prayer request online which was placed in Israel, near Jesus’ tomb. And with the help of intercessory prayers and my own, my 97-year-old mom checked out from the hospital in good health. (The discharge papers made her a year younger)

Still, it is important to know that our prayers were answered and she made it out of the hospital alive and well. But we must not forget that someday we will lose our loved ones…one by one.

In these times, I sometimes turn to the wisdom of the Bible for comfort, and especially, Ecclesiastes 3:1–8.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

Losing someone is the worst day of your life, especially someone who has been close to you. It’s like an ache that goes deep into your heart. When I lost my dad in 2021, I cried uncontrollably, and then I could cry no more. It was as if the words from the Bible came alive, especially at the end of the mourning period. My eyes could no longer shed tears, and it was as though the next stage had commenced…

Lest change comes too soon, and my loved one someday passes, I will try to remain strong and know that this is all part of nature, and of God’s will. For even the seasons of life are reflected in the falling of leaves, and the growth of Springtime.

In the meantime, one should enjoy one’s time with our loved ones, and know that even a quiet moment together will forever be captured in your mind.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
