Summary

Writers may feel anxious about contributing to NewsBreak due to its strict content policies and the potential for reduced earnings compared to Medium.

Abstract

NewsBreak's introduction of a more stringent editorial policy, including a strike system for perceived violations, has led to increased nervousness among writers. The platform, which initially offered guaranteed earnings to early contributors, has since decreased these guarantees and implemented penalties for content that does not adhere to their policies, such as using too much quoted material or insufficient documentation. Writers have expressed concerns over the difficulty of appealing strikes, the risk of termination after three strikes, and the reduced earning potential. Despite these challenges, some writers continue to contribute to NewsBreak, possibly due to earning more than on Medium, while others have left the platform, preferring the less restrictive environment of Medium.

Opinions

  • NewsBreak's policy changes, including the strike system and reduced earnings, have been met with dissatisfaction by some writers.
  • The strict enforcement of content guidelines and the low likelihood of successful appeals against strikes contribute to writer anxiety.
  • The potential for termination after receiving three strikes creates a stressful environment for NewsBreak contributors.
  • Despite the challenges, the possibility of higher earnings on NewsBreak compared to Medium incentivizes some writers to continue publishing on the platform.
  • Writers who prioritize a stress-free publishing experience may prefer Medium, which is seen as more accepting of diverse content.

Why You Might Be Nervous Writing For NewsBreak

They can be more picky than Medium

Many people write for Medium and NewsBreak

There have been some writers on Medium who wrote stories about how they left NewsBreak after changes were introduced several months ago. NewsBreak had given their initial writers (or contributors) big rewards by guaranteeing a certain amount of earnings. Then they made some changes, which included a strike system besides a big decrease in earnings along with no guarantees.

The strike system which they initiated included rejecting some stories for certain problems which they considered as violations of their policies and restrictions. It was relatively easy for people to observe the restrictions to NOT include violence, nudity, profanity, and items such as that. It was not that easy to adhere to all the requirements. They could give a strike for too much quoted material or for not documenting everything written. It’s a form of rejection.

NewsBreak, according to what others have written, almost never would allow an appeal of the strike after one was given. They would allow a person to appeal, but it was not likely that they would change their first ruling of giving the strike.

There were some stories on Medium about people who received three strikes on NewsBreak and were terminated. They say that they will suspend you after two strikes so you cannot submit anything for a week. If you receive three strikes, you are OUT.

Some NewsBreak writers left on their own because they did not like the changes which were made, including the strike system and the fact that they could not earn as much as previously.

You might be nervous that you will get a strike when writing for NewsBreak. If you do get a strike, you have to be nervous that you will get another one. Every submission has that risk so it could make for a nervous situation to submit any article. You could just stop submitting, but maybe you are earning some money so you want to keep trying.

If your stats and earnings have gone down in Medium, it may be tempting to spend more time on NewsBreak. That could be a good choice, or it might cause a lot of stress and nervousness.

Medium accepts all kinds of content more readily than NewsBreak. Perhaps Medium may be the better choice if you want to avoid stress and be less nervous when pressing “submit” or “ready to publish.”

If your earnings on NewsBreak surpass what you earn on Medium, it would be wise to continue to pursue it. Success may be possible.
