Why writing on Medium is far superior to freelancing
Writing on Medium is like buying a dividend stock that pays you every month, and that’s why I think it’s far superior to freelancing.
Instead of investing money in someone else’s business to get a small return, however, you’re investing time in your own business to generate income.
If you invest that time wisely, you have the potential to get a monthy paycheque forever.
As a freelancer, you produce something of value and you’re paid (probably not very handsomely, either) one time for it. That money goes into the void of your daily expenses and you never see it again.
When you own your intellectual property, it pays you.
This is the difference between people who just get by in life and people who make real money.
The ones who make real money own things.

The Medium advantage
I started writing on Medium back in late August and went really hard on the platform in September, publishing more than 50 articles.
Four months later, those articles are still paying me every single day.
As I like to say, they’re now my little employees. They go to work every day and come home with a bit of money.
Had I tried to sell them as freelance articles, I would have wasted countless hours researching publications, writing pitches, trusting editors with them, waiting for them to be published, etc.
Instead, they’re my little writing dividend shares that started paying me immediately and have been ever since.
Let me give you an example from my main account over at James Julian.
I chose this one because it was the third article I wrote since becoming active on this platform back in late August.
Even though my work was done on this article four months ago, it continues to pay me this day.

After the initial big pop, which came as a huge surprise to me given I was new to the platform and was frankly just excited to be getting $0.02 out of my writing, it tapered down and settled into a low hum.
The little bumps you see along the way are when I have another story turn into a hit and people find my old stuff.
The thing to remember about this is that I own my old stuff.
It keeps working for me even though I haven’t touched it in months.
It’s my intellectual property now — property that pays a dividend.
Only these dividends are way more impressive than the ones I get from my stocks, which are pieces of companies I don’t own.
Another example to give you a clear picture of that (stick with me even if you aren’t an investor — it’s important).
I build positions in stocks over time, and one that I’ve just started averaging into is the chipmaker Qualcomm (don’t read too much into the actual stock — I currently have holdings in 163 companies).
The current value of my holdings in QCOM is $42.36 (I average in using fractional buys over very long periods of time).
Last week, Qualcomm paid me a dividend of $0.24 for the quarter. If that held steady, my dividend return for the year would be a shade under one dollar.
So QCOM has paid me a one-time $0.24 for holding $42.36 worth of stock during a 3-month period.
Meanwhile, the Medium story I posted about yesterday, one that required zero financial investment on my part, paid me $1.70 yesterday, $1.39 the day before, and $0.87 the day before that.
Makes dividend payments look like a pittance in comparison, doesn’t it?
It’ll also pay me today, tomorrow, and the day after.
And that’s just one of the close to 140 articles I’ve written across James Julian and this account.
I think I’ve made my point, but it’s one you need to clearly understand if you want to go above and beyond typical earnings.
If you freelance, you’ll always be working for someone else.
If you generate royalties from intellectual property, you’ll finally be working for yourself.
