The concept of soulmates might be cringe-worthy to some, conjuring cheesy semantics from a bygone era of Hippie beads, ornamental Buddha’s and dream catchers. But the term still rings true for a lot of people. Whether you are a believer or not, the idea of an underlying and powerful bond with one person is rare and extremely valued to most of us. When you feel a deep and unexplained connection with someone, it gives your soul a sense of reassurance; a feeling of certainty and belonging in an uncertain world — a soulmate kind of belonging.

Soulmates are Entwined Throughout Our History

The soulmate concept has flavored our history since the very beginning, with countless religious doctrines, spiritual practices and ancient beliefs forming their own variations of what constitutes a soulmate. Spiritually speaking, it is said that even before you were born, the identity of your spiritual half has been determined. Each soul has a perfect match — your true soulmate.

The ancient Sufi path of Fana tells us that our true dual soulmate will appear in our lives to ignite an inner journey from separation consciousness to unity consciousness.

Interestingly, Sufi teachings state that the initial journey begins with just a glance. The two souls in question may already know each other, but until they are ready to become aware of the dual soul energy between them, the glance will not take place.

The first time they truly “see” each other is known as the first awakened glance that sets both souls on fire and begins the ancient path of Fana. Turfrey says that: “The energy is exchanged and now there is no going back. The path of Fana has now been invoked.”

The ancient Sufi’s were far from alone in their dual-soul beliefs. The mystical notion that our souls belong to a significant other etches itself deep within our historical timeline.

Hmolpedia states that the term “soulmate” or “split soul theory” is derived from Egyptian-Greek religio-mythology: “Which posits that humans originated in pairs, bound in one body, with one original soul, but were split in two, supposedly for doing something offensive to the gods, after which the newly separated humans forever wandered the earth in search of their long lost soul mate so to reunite their incomplete souls and become one again.”

These ancient theories may explain the uncanny and enigmatic familiarity you experience when unknowingly meeting your true soulmate for the first time, or the strange and sudden sense that an immensely important person has just entered your life — your true or dual soulmate.

Soulmate Mythology Throughout the Ages

• 2000 BC: Egyptian, Book of the Dead; we learn that Shu and Tefnut were supposed to possess but one soul between them, but that the two halves of it were identified with the soul of Osiris and the soul of Ra, which together formed the great double soul which dwelt in Tattu.
• 600 BC: Greek philosophers, including Solon, Thales, and Plato all visited the great college at Heliopolis, and that Plato, while studying there, learned their soul-splitting origin of gods and human’s theory.
• Plato: 400 BC — Plato, after studying abroad in Egypt, penned the modern version of soul mate theory, according to which the formerly-known supreme god Atum, who in the Early Kingdom became Atum-Ra, who became Amen-Ra in the New Kingdom, who became Zeus, or Amen-Zeus, as Alexander the Great (332BC) later legally defined things, split one original human into two humans with half-souls.

The Missing Piece

When you encounter your true soulmate, it can be tough when you begin to become aware of what’s actually going on — it feels as if a dormant, timeless flame ignites within that you never knew existed.

Like a soul activation.

It’s an undeniable feeling deep in your soul that tells you this person is someone profound. They may appear in disguise, catching you off guard to slingshot you into spiritual grow and illumination. You literally feel as if there is a mysterious force pushing you forward toward the unknown.

Why Would Someone Reject their True Soulmate?

Hmm … it is a good question.

Let’s explore the past some more.

Ancient Sufi teachings believe that this journey is intense because it asks us to give it everything we have. This is because through the encounter, both souls have stepped onto the ancient path that uses the forces and power of love to destroy the ego-self.

When you have “glanced” and “seen” your true soulmate, the path cannot be sanctioned half-heartedly. It demands authenticity and calls for honor between the souls.

In other words, encountering your true soulmate will force you to face the illusions you’ve constructed in your life that have fostered false belief systems surrounding relationships, society and the world, and thereby separated you from the truth — your connection to source energy.

You are essentially being asked to accept the path of the heart and journey into unification back to your soul origins: your divinity.

There is no room for the ego-self when the universe has presented the path back to unconditional love — and this is what your soulmate truly signifies.

In large, this is probably the most significant reason why those who reject such a sacred and beautiful gift deny their true soulmate, as the connection is an outer manifestation of an inner journey toward enlightenment.

This sacred soul-path equates with major change, and change means pain, tenacity, fire and courage. It means searching your soul and the willingness to expand your heart like never before; and surrendering to your old-self to embody new ways of being in the world.

It means inner-work and accepting the ancient truths ingrained in your soul.

And all of this inner-work must be done within ourselves — identifying and healing the darkness or obstacles within before our actual physical bodies can embrace union with our true soulmate.

All it takes is a glance to ignite the soul-flame recognition. What follows is the distinction between the light and dark; the journey to end all journey’s that will inevitably lead you back home.

I think that there is some truth to the old saying: “Nothing worthwhile ever comes easily”. In the realm of true soulmates, nothing could be further from the truth.

Meanwhile, for those of us who believe in soulmates, Buddha ornaments and all things divine —it is best to ignore the sideswipes and sniggers from those who cannot fully understand, and keep twirling those Hippie beads while believing in the only thing that actually matters in this world: LOVE
