Summary

Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, in 2018 is widely criticized as a significant error, undermining a landmark agreement that was crucial to Obama's legacy and beneficial for global peace and Iran's economy.

Abstract

The article discusses the controversial withdrawal of the United States from the Iran Nuclear Deal under President Donald Trump in 2018. The JCPOA, established in 2015, was a multilateral agreement involving Iran, the five permanent members of the UN, Germany, and the European Union, which aimed to limit Iran's uranium enrichment and nuclear capabilities in exchange for the gradual lifting of economic sanctions. Trump's exit from the deal, despite Iran's compliance and its positive economic impact, was seen as a strategic blunder that jeopardized the deal's continuity and had significant implications for global oil markets and regional politics. The move was politically motivated and criticized for lacking justification, with allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia influencing the decision to undermine Iran's regional influence.

Opinions

  • The author views Trump's withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal as a significant blunder, akin to his previous withdrawals from the TPP, Paris Climate Deal, and Obamacare.
  • The article suggests that Trump's actions were not based on a thorough understanding of the deal, as evidenced by his signing of the deal's compliance certification twice before withdrawing.
  • The decision to exit the deal is portrayed as influenced by traditional American allies such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, who are seen as having successfully pressured Trump.
  • The author implies that Trump's move was an attempt to sabotage Iran's regional political influence in the Middle East, rather than a decision based on the merits of the nuclear deal itself.
  • The article conveys that the international community, including countries like Oman, Egypt, Pakistan, Italy, and India, viewed the deal positively and was critical of Trump's decision to exit.
  • The author expresses hope that the remaining brokers of the deal will continue to uphold it, despite Trump's actions, to maintain peace and brotherhood within the world community.

Trump’s Incorrect Judgement of the Iran Nuclear Deal

JCPOA- Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action which was formed in 2015 was scraped by Donald Trump in 2018 by exiting the deal.

Trump once again made a big blunder by pulling out of the landmark Iran Nuclear Deal. It comes after foolishly pulling out of TPP, Paris Climate Deal, and Obamacare without proper citations and not knowing its consequences. All of which were seen as the most important part of Obama’s legacy.

Iran Nuclear Deal was a Framework agreement which was agreed upon in 2015, by the 5 permanent members of the UN, Germany and the European Union.

The main Pivotal role was played by the United States and its President Barack Obama. It’s Drafting was made in 2013, on a Joint Action Plan in Geneva. Later on, it took over 18 months to formally adopt a deal between all these nations through continuous talks and negotiations.

What Does This Deal Mean?

According to this deal, Iran will be able to keep uranium enrichment only at 3.67% from the previous 98% for 15 years. The number of Centrifuges will also be reduced to a quarter. The 300 kg of this Uranium enriched, can now be used for Power plants across the nations, but it is not sufficient for producing a nuclear bomb.

The International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) will keep a close eye on the deal to check whether Iran complies with the deal. By doing and abiding by the deal, Iran can get its Economic Sanctions lifted slowly which were brought in after the 1979 Islamic revolution and later on for developing nuclear technology.

What did it mean for Iran?

Iran which was under a significant decline in GDP growth began to Prosper. After its sanctions got lifted, Iran was now able to produce and export a large amount of oil, which again brought back Iran to days of Prosperity. Iran is now the third-largest producer of oil in the World. Iran now can also use nuclear technology for research, science, medicine, industry, farming and a lot more.

Countries like Oman, Egypt, Pakistan, Italy, and India welcomed this deal and called it Landmark one. While Nations like Israel criticized it.

The Exit and Aftermath

Trump since 2016, the Presidential campaign had threatened to exit from this deal and will try to reimpose sanctions. This also a plot twist as Trump took nearly a year to finally exit it.

As per deal regulations, CIA must get the deal signed by the US president every six months stating that “Iran is complying to deal 100%”.

So, that means Trump signed it two times, before exiting from it the third time. Israelis and Saudis, the traditional American allies always tried to put pressure on Iran via the US. This time they again succeeded to fool Mr Trump and do injustice to the deal.

After Trump exited the Deal, there was massive outrage among the Deal brokers. All of them hit out at Donald Trump for making a grave mistake. Neither could Trump justify why he did that nor could his counterparts force him to roll back on it.

The first reaction came from Iranian Prime Minister, Hassan Rouhani that Trump did the biggest mistake and he will regret it sooner. He also requested other brokers to stay in the deal.

It was later followed by burning of the American flag in the Iranian Parliament and Chanting of slogans “Death to America’ on the streets of Tehran by locals.

What does Exit Mean for India and the world?

India is most likely to be affected most by this blunder, as India under Narendra Modi decided to build and develop Chhabhahar port and its extension to Various other cities inland via a railway line. With the sanctions back in place, the continuation of the construction of the port is on ambiguity.

As Iran is one of the largest suppliers of oil and also being an OPEC member, sanctions will directly hurt its supply causing a steady rise in crude oil prices and a decrease in the availability of oil for nations like India, China, Pakistan etc.

Conclusion

Exit from the deal was clearly a misplanned move. The IAEA and CIA always confirmed that Iran was 100% with the deal and it works as per all the guidelines. It also affirmed that The Ballistic Programme has nothing to do with the Nuclear deal. Still, Trump and Netanyahu tried to combine both and tried to say that Iran violated the deal and such a deal need not exist anymore.

It is pretty much clear that Trump hasn’t even read a single page of the Deal and its framework. Taking politically motivated false decisions isn’t a dignified approach by a President of a Country, who stand with the people and take them through the right path. Trump again shows that he has not even respected his chair, unlike his predecessors. US and Israel by this move, just aim to reduce Iran’s strong Regional Political influence in the Middle East like Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Now, let us hope that the deal stays intact as rest of brokers feel the need to uphold it and once again peace and brotherhood prevail among the World Community.
