Why Tiredness Is Good For You
A stillness for body and mind
Now when I talk tiredness I’m not talking about fatigue caused by medical conditions. I’m talking tiredness when you’ve been so damned busy that the effort of lifting your coffee mug up seems as huge as scaling the heady heights of Mount Everest. As humans, we are imprinted to fight tiredness. Keep going and get that job done. At all costs carry on. Don’t give in. Activity must rule over inactivity. Busy, busy, busy. How often have we all heard “keep yourself busy” as though it’s a cure-all for everything.
I don’t agree. I think tiredness tells you something if you care to listen. It’s time for your body and mind to rest. To blank the mind and still the body. You can let your mind wander and dream. Sit on the sofa and binge-watch Netflix, read or stare into space. I’m having one of those days here. And I’m enjoying every minute. Of being tired.
I look at so many people, rushing about, hither and yon with somewhat pained looks on their faces. “Got to be here at ten, there at twelve and oh I’m shopping at four”. Rushing through life without taking in the scenery. It must catch up with them at some point and in some cases, probably quite badly.
My brother gave me some sage advice. Some years ago he had a heart attack. He’s done well and now walks miles and thinks nothing of walking twelve miles with friends. However, if he has a very busy day one day he rests a bit the next. A good idea that has paid dividends with his health and one I try to follow.
A day of tiredness can have surprising consequences. I’m sitting here letting my mind wander around. It’s pottering about somewhere and floating through my keyboard. Random thinkings just coming out. A day of tiredness and the stilling of body and mind can leave us refreshed for a new day tomorrow.
But for now let’s just enjoy feeling stillness for today.
