Why The Seed Exercise is so special!

The Seed Exercise as narrated by Paulo Coelho in “The Pilgrimage”.
In case you have read this book, you will connect to what I have written but if you have not, you might connect even better.
After reading almost 150 books till day, I go through Paulo Coelho’s work and I wonder why out of those 150, none was his?
“The Pilgrimage” is a journey which Paulo took. The journey became mine.
RAM!
When I first saw these words inside the book, I wondered what a Brazilian author writting about Lord Ram? But he wrote something different and it’s equally pious.
“The Pilgrimage” takes you into a meditative zone. The RAM activities as narrated by Paulo in the book are a simple and practical means to visit a wonderful world.
The world of Inside. Inside yourself!
First of the exercises in the book is “The Seed Exercise”.
First, I am going to simply tell you what he wrote.
“Kneel on the ground, then seat yourself on your heels and bend forward so that your head touches your knees. Stretch your arms behind you. You are now in a fetal position. Relax, releasing all of your tensions. Breathe calmly and deeply. Little by little you will perceive you are a little seed, cradled in the comfort of the earth. Everything around you is warm and delicious. You are in a deep, restful sleep.”
“Suddenly, a finger moves. The shoot no longer wants to be a seed; it wants to grow. Slowly you begin to move your arms, and then your body will begin to rise, straightening up until you are seated on your heels. Now you begin to lift your body up and slowly, slowly you become erect, still kneeling on the ground”.
“The moment has come to break completely through the earth. You begin to rise slowly, placing your foot on the ground, then the other, fighting against the disequilibrium just as a shoot battles to make its own space, until finally you are standing. Imagine the area around you, the sun, the water, the wind, and the birds. Now you are a shoot that is beginning to grow. Slowly raise your arms toward the sky. Then stretch yourself more and more, more and more, as if you want to grasp the enormous sun that shines above you giving you strength and attracting you. Your body begins to become more and more rigid, all of your muscles strain, and you feel yourself to be growing, growing, growing-you become huge. The tension increases more and more until it becomes painful, unbearable. When you can no longer stand it, scream and open your eyes”.
“Repeat this exercise for seven consecutive days. Always at the same time.”
I started doing The Seed Exercise, the day I read about it.
The first time I did it, I genuinely saw myself elevating from a mere Seed to a giant Tree. The transformation was beautiful!
Thereon, I did the exercise every day. It just takes less than 5 minutes!
This is my experience with The Seed Exercise:
I faced the Sun, kneel down, folded myself like a Seed. Pictures of a small seed crossed my mind each time followed by a light green bright sapling. I was just a seed, lying beneath the moist and warm Earth. During a few of the exercises, I felt like smiling because I knew that I was about to grow!
I kept the pace of the exercise very slow. I imagined the sapling grow into size, the Sun rays falling onto it and sapling becoming a plant. I felt like a sapling whose arms were now moving and slowly trying to get on top of the Earth. The sapling was now becoming a plant. The body was trying to move. The process was slow and there was an itch to move fast. But The Seed doesn’t grow fast! I had to go through the pain, the patience, the process!
At the middle of the exercise, I had to elevate myself from a plant to a tree. I had to lift myself from my knees, to my first foot and then on both feet. I trembled, the core asked for extra strength, the discomfort was strongest. But I knew in my head that every new habit, any phase of growth and all new things have to go through this. If the plant is persistent and persevering, it will bear fruits!
From here on, it was only growth, the Tree went up and up. I did calf-raises to ensure that I feel like a growing tree. The imagination kept me moving until I became a huge tree with wide branches and lots of bird over them. The tree wished to grow more and my hands and legs start paining. I kept going, the growth does not stop, it should not stop. The tree wants more and a point comes where I don’t want to hold on. I was facing the Sun, the heat and the light directly on my face. The body toppled, sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right. I felt like the wind was pushing me.
Trees move when the wind blows. Are they not trying to balance themselves, to stay strong, to stay rooted, to ensure that the birds on top of them do not lose their homes! The feeling while doing “The Seed exercise” was similar.
The pain was strong now, so I relax and open my eyes.
I face the Sun and say Thank you to the almighty for allowing me to grow from a Seed to a lush green rich Tree. I am ready to bear fruits!
When I open my eyes, I see a new Me!
What did I learned? I am absolutely not sure, but I saw myself growing from a nothing to something. I saw the journey, I faced the pain, I enjoyed it!
The exercise took me to my core. A few of the times I felt like a baby in my mother’s womb. I was folded, I was growing, I was becoming something. Aren’t these feelings wonderful?
Thanks Paulo for writing “The Pilgrimage”, for taking that road to Santiago, for bringing transformation to many lives. Thanks.
Note: The Seed Exercise seems to me like a complete activity. It involves meditation, physical exercise, mindfulness, imagination, yoga, calmness etc. etc. etc.
