Proof That Your Decisions Today Alter the Past
Why consciousness can change reality?

Here we are, little old humans on our little old planet, thinking we’ve got this whole “reality” thing figured out. Time goes forward, cause leads to effect, and our consciousness is just along for the ride. Seems sensible enough, right?
Buy why should you even care?
What if time is actually more flexible than that? What if the future could somehow reach back and change the past? I know, it hurts our heads to think about it!
The Quantum Rabbit Hole
It all started about 200 years ago when we realized light could be both a particle and a wave. This led to the iconic Double Slit Experiment which revealed this wacky duality of light.

Here’s how it works: you shoot light at a barrier with two slits and see what happens. Common sense says you’d get two stripes of light on the other side (Like the image above), from the photons acting like…well…photons. But instead, you get an interference pattern like light passed through both slits simultaneously as a wave!

But then, get this, when you try to observe which slit the light goes through, it suddenly acts like particles again! As if the light knows it’s being watched! Spooky! Scientists were scratching their heads for sure.

One Photon at a Time Makes Things Even Stranger
Now if this wasn’t weird enough, it gets even crazier when you shoot one photon at a time through the slits. Whattya expect to see then? Just two stripes right, from the individual photons going through one slit or the other? Wrongo bongo! You still get an interference pattern as if each photon is interfering with itself as a wave!
How’s this possible? “Is each photon splitting in two and going through both slits?! Preposterous!” So they decided to spy on the photons to see what they were up to.
When they observed which slit the photon went through — no more interference pattern! Just two stripes as expected. But then when they turned off the observations, the interference pattern returned! It’s like the photons were changing their behavior based on whether or not they felt observed! What in the name of Schrodinger’s Cat is going on here!?
Plot Twist — The Future Affects the Past?!
Now, a clever chap named John Wheeler decided to take things up a notch. He devised an experiment to only observe the photons after they went through the slits. The idea being, since the observation happened after the photons passed through, it shouldn’t affect them right?
Wrong again! Even observing after the photons went through the slits caused them to retroactively go through only one slit as particles! So somehow, observing them in the present, was affecting what they did in the past! As if the future was changing the past!
How could this be possible? How could what hasn’t happened yet change what already did? They were beginning to think their pal Marty McFly took the baton of time travel research.
Consciousness Seems to Shape Reality
But the rabbit hole goes even deeper my friends! This whole time, the only difference in the experiments was whether or not human consciousness was observing the photons by measuring and recording them. When we watched, photons acted like particles. When we weren’t, photons acted like waves.
It was as if human consciousness itself was affecting how the photons behaved! And not just in the present, but even retroactively in the past! As if consciousness shapes the very reality we find ourselves in!
Consciousness? Shaping reality? Changing the past? That’s impossible! But the more experiments they ran, the more it seemed to be true!
What Does it All Mean?
So what in Einstein’s name does it all mean? Science hasn’t settled on any one interpretation yet, but here are some ways we might make sense of it all:
- Time is an illusion. The past, present and future all exist together in a static block universe. We experience time moment by moment like frames of film running through a projector, but it’s all predetermined from the start. Consciousness gives the illusion of changing the past.
- Reality is subjective. Our consciousness literally shapes, constructs and selects the reality we experience out of probabilities and possibilities rather than an objective world “out there”. We’re co-creators of our reality.
- Nonlocal consciousness. Our individual consciousness is an extension of a universal consciousness that exists beyond space-time. So effects can precede causes in ways that seem impossible if we think of our minds as strictly local.
- We live in the Matrix. Nothing is real! We’re all plugged into some elaborate simulation.
- It’s quantum magic. No one understands quantum mechanics, it’s just confusing and absurd. The equations work but seem to defy logic. We just have to accept the quantum world is weird and move on.
The deeper we explore our reality, the more mysterious it seems to get. The only thing we know for sure is that we don’t know much of anything at all! But isn’t that part of the fun?
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us after all!
So we might as well enjoy the ride through this wibbly wobbly, timey wimey reality we find ourselves in!
