Freedom of Speech and Expression Should Be Absolute or Not
Can we go on and blabber anything that comes into our mouth?
The moment you tell the society,
“Look guys, this is everything you can talk about and how to talk about…”,
you are asking the society to wear masks. This “one size fits all” mask, is obviously not fitting everyone. You have no idea what kind of people you are putting behind these masks. I would rather have these people speak whatever they would like to speak. I believe this would be the filter for you to choose your people. You might gain a few friends or lose some, you might get to know whom to vote for when the next election comes. What do you do when you had started an interview that you thought you would watch only for a few minutes, but turned out, it is actually a very interesting one? You might go ahead and watch it entirely, right? If you can do that, what is stopping you from fending off from the bad content? The next time you hear a stupid quote from a politician you follow, unfollow and make sure you do not vote for him.
A hashtag and a few words can bring the whole city into its feet. But I do not push away the possibility that it can also bring people together in the shadows. Terrorist organizations are a good example. ISIS might be using the latest technologies and the omnipresent social media to recruit people. But do not forget that these people, who respond to these triggers to join the bad side, just chose what they wanted. Had they been in their initial environment with a normal job and normal family, what are the chances that these people would have been a bad influence on the society they live in? You choose only when you have choices.
Lack of choices do not alter your fundamental behaviour.
We do have a legal system to punish the people who manipulate and take advantage of the fundamental rights. That sorts it out. But it goes without saying that, you will be held responsible for whatever you say or type or make. You can make it or break it with just a collection of alphabets. But it should not be the case that they can try you or put you behind the bars or punish you legally for your words, in whichever manifestation it comes out. The only punishment, if it deserves any, should be deteriorating followers, losing the voters, losing friends or even own family!
The power to articulate your thoughts should lie within. It is a great power, and remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
