Why the COVID-19 Pandemic Makes Us Need Animals More Than Ever

Our daily routines as we once knew have been shattered by the serious global COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing death tolls rising, loss of jobs, income, not knowing what’s yet to come. All of this has put a serious emotional strain on all of us. One of the resulting actions is the flooding of all social media outlets with cute animal photos and videos of cats, dogs, and all other types of companion animals. It brings comfort to scroll along and see adorable animals. It brings a smile to our face and an inner calmness within.

We love our animals. Dogs, cats, horses, bunnies, hamsters, chickens, lambs, whatever furry pet you choose to own. We often make them part of the family and sort of humanize them. We even think of them as our “kids,” whether or not you have a human child. We take them with us on vacations, let them sleep in our beds, eat by the table with us, and enjoy their company in the good times and bad. Our pets can offer us much needed solace, especially in times of great need.

We all have a need to feel comfort right now during the COVID-19 pandemic. This global crisis has turned our daily lives upside down. From the economic woes, uncertainty of the future for all of us, and possibly loved ones or friends stricken by the Coronavirus. We feel lost. Bewildered. Scared. Emotions are fluctuating by the day with news and events our minds could never have even imagined. With social distancing we are limited by who we can see or be with. Even for those critically ill in the ICU’s on ventilators dying. Loved ones are not allowed to see that person to say goodbye. It’s actually mind-boggling everything happening all around us.

Yet your beloved pet can provide you with an inner peace, comfort and security with their unconditional love. They don’t know what’s going on in the world right now, but they can sense from you that something is very wrong. Instinctively they want to comfort you even more than they normally do.
The human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial relationship between humans and animals which positively impacts the health and well-being of both. When you have a pet you have constant companionship, affection, and love. This bond between humans and animals has been a subject of much research. Positive, measurable effects have been proven such as the reduction of fear, anxiety, and an increase in oxytocin levels in the brain.
Interacting with animals can help you decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of loneliness and isolation.
With the social distancing and stay-at-home mandates, most people are in isolation who never experienced this before. It can have very negative effects on your mental health.

Most people have the opportunity now to spend extra time with their pets. Sit with them, hug them, love on them. Read a book to them! They will think you are talking to them and will love you even more! You have so much to offer your beloved companion, and in return they give us a sacred bond that stays in our hearts forever. It is also important for children to either have a pet or have access to an animal to develop this bond. It can have very positive effects on child development including increased self-esteem, cognitive development, and social skills. There is a great amount of research going on to study the effects of children and animal bonds. With all the turmoil surrounding us, children are experiencing stress, anxiety, and loneliness just like adults.

Right now, we all need to snuggle with our furry friends and give them a very long hug. Remember, though, once we all get back to some semblance of a normal life, don’t forget to continue spending time with your loyal companion. They have feelings and needs just like us.
