Why the 30-Day Medium Writing Challenge Doesn’t Work

3 Ways to Succeed at Your Goals

Image created by author on Canva

I thought about starting a 30-day writing challenge like I’ve read many writers doing here on Medium. However, what keeps coming up for me is the difference between quality vs. quantity.

I’d rather write consistently and challenge myself to post on a set schedule of once, twice, or three times a week, with space for rogue articles when creativity strikes, than set myself up for failure.

Writing to the best of my abilities works better for me than churning out BS articles in an effort to meet a deadline of a post a day.

It’s excellent if you are a writer who can stick to a daily schedule and post valuable content. I’m in no way knocking your hustle or aspirations.

I’m just telling you what aligns with me and possibly many others.

This article is to express my thoughts on the matter and for writers who resonate with this way of thinking.

Moreover, I would like to share three ways to be successful at any goal you set out to achieve.

Three Ways to Succeed at Your Goals

  1. Match the What with the Who
  2. Identify Your Why
  3. Be Realistic

Match the What with the Who

Your goals must align with who you are or they aren’t going to be sustainable.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What are my core values and intentions for achieving this goal?
  • Will I enjoy the process and stick it out even when it gets challenging?
  • Does this goal fit the long-term vision for my life?
  • Does this goal resonate with my highest Self?
  • Will I look back at this goal and say that putting in the time and effort to achieve it was worth it?

Identify Your Why

Get clear on the reason for your goal and use it as your north star and point of reference.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • How will I benefit from achieving this goal and will it be fulfilling?
  • Does this goal contribute to the betterment of others or is it just for me?
  • Is this goal driven by fear of missing out or avoiding something else?
  • Am I aiming to leave a legacy behind and will achieving this goal contribute to the legacy I aspire to create?

Be Realistic

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Take a look at all the factors that go into achieving your goal and ensure they are practical for you and your lifestyle.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Is my goal clearly defined and have I broken it down into smaller, actionable steps?
  • Is my timeline realistic and have I set achievable milestones to track my progress?
  • Have I realistically assessed the challenges I might face and do I have what it takes to overcome them?
  • Am I focusing solely on the end result, or will I appreciate the journey and celebrate smaller successes along the way?

Conclusion

When looking to see if the 30-day writing challenge worked for me, I approached it similar to how I approach my goals. It’s not that you can’t have ambition, I encourage big, lofty goals, but your disappointment will soon follow if they are not authentic to you.

Setting overly ambitious goals can be demotivating while underestimating your potential can limit your growth. Aim for a sweet spot that challenges you while remaining achievable.
