Why the “£10k Month” Online Culture is Toxic
When you first set foot in the online business world, it can quite frankly be a shock to the system.
You log into Facebook groups and see that fateful post yet again, “I made 100 sales in the DMs last week — wanna know how?”
You open your emails and there it is, “How to go from £0k-20k in 2 days!”
You scroll through Instagram and it’s the same messaging again and again and again. £10k months, £100k sales, 6 figures this and that… And if you’re not seeing that level of ‘success’ in your business? Well you’re simply not successful.
Here’s the thing. When I decided I wanted to pivot to copywriting, it wasn’t for the money. If you’d seen what I decided to charge when I first started out, you’d know that was definitely the case.
I did it because I wanted a different lifestyle.
I wanted to do what I loved every single day — and maybe that’s the lovestruck writer in me, but it’s true.
And for me that wasn’t chasing after monetary goals or the ‘next big thing’. It wasn’t about ticking another box and following what everyone else was doing. And it wasn’t about attributing success to how much money I was making.
It was plain and simple about writing.
The Online Truth.
First of all, no-one can guarantee you can earn any sum of money. So if someone’s promising you a £10k month if you just do what they say, you’ve got yourself a red flag — and probably an emptier bank account.
And before you let the figures you’re not making make you feel inferior or incapable, think about this…
Those figures are great, but what about actual profit? There’s this funny thing in the online world where people lack total transparency. Some business owners have huge teams (and major expenses) so whilst they might be making big sales, they’re also seeing a LOT of outgoings.
Spoiler alert: Not all of us want that.
My Advice?
Don’t get overconsumed by the general bullshit messaging that’s floating around and threatening to cloud your judgment (and your personal goals). Stay in your own lane and focus on what YOU want to achieve.
Think about what’s actually important to you. Do you want more time? Do you want limited expenses? Do you want certain days off? You can still earn good money and not work yourself into the ground. Prioritise what matters most to you.
Most importantly? Define what success actually means to you, not the surface-layer stuff we see in the online space. People will always try to sell you their version of “the dream”, but the dream is yours and yours alone.
Everyone seems to think we want millions of pounds, a massive mansion, 3 cars, first class flights (okay as a travel lover, I wouldn’t mind some of those!), designer clothes, and a team of people doing every role imaginable…
But it’s okay if you don’t want that. You get to do things your way. Make an impact on your terms. Have success by your rules.
And if that does involve making a certain amount of money, that’s okay too.
Just don’t let the driving force of your life be something you don’t align with.
