Why Sonic Origins Didn’t Bother with Sonic 3 and instead went with Sonic 3 & Knuckles! My Theory.

The answer is kind of obvious if you’ve played Sonic 3!

For any of us gamers who thought that we weren’t going to get Sonic Origins, turned around and lied about it; we were playing that game in secret or at least I was. But, that’s not why I’m here today.

For the longest time, I was trying to decipher why Sonic 3 and Knuckles made it to Sonic Origins and Sonic 3 didn’t. After searching my feelings and thinking long and hard, I came to a few conclusions.

For one, anyone whose ever played Sonic 3 knows that after you clear the Launch Base Zone, you’re done with the game. There’s nothing else to do or anything that warrants a secondary playthrough of the game. Okay, fine.

Sonic 3 was a very limited game, if you didn’t get all 7 Chaos Emeralds before you met with Robotnik on the Launch Base Zone then you have to go back to previous stages to get them.

Oftentimes, I could see how that might make a gamer feel limited. 12 levels to get all of the Chaos Emeralds, it’s doable on paper but if you’re not that great at it then you might run into a problem trying to round them up.

Now, adding Sonic 3 & Knuckles was smart along the avenues of these 3 things:

  1. Chaos Emeralds
  2. Levels
  3. Story expansion

First, the Chaos Emeralds. After you clear the Launch Base Zone, you’re next stop is Mushroom Hill Zone which takes you over to Knuckles’ territory. If you have all of the Chaos Emeralds then you’ll be introduced to the Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic upon successfully getting all 7 of the Super Emeralds.

I mean, why stop at 7 Chaos Emeralds when you can expand on that and give birth to an even greater super power as it were. When you look at how great Sonic 3 & Knuckles was on the original Sega Genesis, people across the world will agree it was a masterpiece for its time to which I would also agree.

Incidentally, having Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in one place doesn’t make any sense which is why I believe that the game devs planned it in this way which again would make them smart in doing so.

Sonic 3 was okay, but at times when I beat it in the past, it used to spur me on along the lines of “what if there was more after this”, “there should definitely be more after this”. Not even a whole year later, we get Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

On Sonic 3 & Knuckles, we got these awesome levels.

  1. Mushroom Hill
  2. Flying Battery
  3. Sandopolis, I hate this level
  4. Lava Reef
  5. Hidden Palace, my favorite
  6. Sky Sanctuary
  7. Death Egg
  8. Doomsday Zone

These levels were and always will test the best of the best, I beat this game before my brother and get this, my mother got him the Sonic & Knuckles lock on technology for Christmas that year and my brother could never beat the final boss on the Doomsday Zone.

I studied everything my brother did wrong and I played the same part and beat it. The key is patience and ring building.
