Why so Many YouTubers are Quitting Right Now

Surf the wave of success

Something very fascinating is happening on YouTube right now. A lot of YouTubers are quitting.

Something’s going on, and I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about this, trying understanding it. Through my analysis, I’ve drawn intriguing conclusions about the larger dynamics at play on YouTube. The departure of YouTubers can’t be mere coincidence, all at once like this can’t be, right? It’s not an accident.

On YouTube, things operate in cycles. I’ve noticed that on YouTube in particular, we have these sort of waves that come that bring a huge amount of energy and excitement, then become saturated, and then fatigue comes in.

The most famous example of this is daily vlogging. When Casey Neistat entered the scene, he introduced a heightened level of production quality and a renewed energy to the format, quickly claiming the top spot. This brought about an enormous surge of excitement and attention, propelling his career to unprecedented levels. Soon after, the format became a template for imitation, giving rise to thousands, even millions, of replicas. Daily vlogging became saturated, Casey Neistat burnt himself out, and the format broke down. That wave came to an end.

YouTube serves as a massive platform for value transmission. This value can be categorized into two main aspects: intrinsic value and production value.

Intrinsic Value Categories:

  • Educational Value: Videos that teach something new or broaden viewers’ perspectives. Lake a lessons on the French Revolution or a reviews of the latest Fujifilm camera.
  • Entertainment Value: Content that captures attention and provides enjoyment. Includes short films, music videos, and comedian clips.
  • Inspiring Value: Material that is artistically stimulating or aspirational regarding a desired lifestyle.

Intrinsic value revolves around the inherent worth of content in terms of its educational, entertaining, or inspirational aspects. On the other hand, production value is concerned with the quality of the video, taking into account factors such as camera quality and lighting. It is essential to make a clear distinction between these two concepts since having high production value doesn’t automatically guarantee intrinsic value.

The Two Providing Value Categories:

  • Low Production Value, High Intrinsic Value: Examples exist where content succeeds with low production quality but valuable information. Authenticity and rawness can be advantageous, especially if catering to the right audience.
  • High Production Value, High Intrinsic Value: Ideal for building a successful career and solid brand. High production quality enhances memorability and emotional impact.

Regardless of production value, delivering value is paramount on YouTube. The platform caters to a broad spectrum of content, ranging from webcam videos to professionally shot content with high-end cameras. Recognizing the significance of value provision ensures content resonates with the diverse preferences and expectations of the audience.

Understanding the balance between intrinsic and production value can guide content creators toward effective strategies for growth and audience engagement on YouTube.

You’re on a treadmill

Frankly, the challenge lies in being on a relentless treadmill, running at an unsustainable pace. The inevitable outcome is exhaustion. But in many ways, you have to do this because you’re attempting to stand out from the enormous amounts of material out there. Significantly, within the life cycle of a trend on YouTube, following the initial phase of excitement characterized by a handful of early-arriving YouTubers enjoying a competitive advantage, others soon catch up. Driven by enthusiasm, they start to emulate, narrowing the gap that initially existed.

Luck

While success on YouTube undoubtedly involves effort, energy, passion, and a bit of luck, a significant aspect of luck is intertwined with timing. Because if you know there are cycles taking place on YouTube, you can begin developing the skills and preparing yourself for the next time there’s an opening, and tastes change, or there’s a shift in what people are looking for. Being mindful of these cycles allows you to position yourself strategically for success.

There are always going to be opportunities on YouTube. There are always going to be opportunities in life. Change is continually happening. Adopting a macro perspective, biding your time, investing in self-improvement, and honing your skills can set the stage for your moment to shine. Embrace the long game, understanding that success may not be immediate.

This current moment on YouTube is particularly thrilling, it’s a time to explore and innovate, taking advantage of the dynamic landscape and discover new possibilities.
