Why Should You Consider Using Gumroad?

I’ve tried Thinkific, Teachable, and Podia, and Gumroad has won

I hate spending money and not getting a return on the investment.

So often, we have this happen to us. We pay for some service, think it will pay for itself, and never does. That has been my experience with Thinkific, Teachable, and Podia.

With all of those platforms, you pay extra to help sell or create a course or product, and then it doesn’t pan out. They aren’t platforms for experimentation. In the end, you pay a bunch for a failed product.

Trust me. I have failed at a few products.

All that to say, I finally came across Gumroad. I had seen people on Twitter share about it but wasn’t so sure about switching things up. So, I finally test drove a freebie, and now I’m hooked.

How does Gumroad work?

Gumroad is a platform to help you sell digital products, courses and tutorials, e-books, memberships, audiobooks, podcasts, and even physical products. And the great thing is that Gumroad is free. When you make a sale, they do take a fee. But, the more you sell, the more your fee goes down.

What I love about Gumroad is how easy it is to set up. The user interface is probably one of the best I have seen for any selling platform. There are some weird hiccups from time to time, but overall it works well.

Best yet, the analytics or straightforward too. You can see how many views your products are getting and sales. They keep track of your customer, and you can build an audience along the way.

What I am doing with Gumroad

So far, I have four products up on my Gumroad profile. Two are free, updated versions of my 100 Headline Treasure Trove and a short resource of 10 Books for Writers. I also have two paid products.

My first paid product is a life planning mini-course that I created initially on Thinkific (did okay, but didn't return on what I was paying for Thinkific), moved to Podia (which didn’t do well at all), and now have on Gumroad (its been up for a week).

My second paid product is a mini-course on creating a Medium Habit. It was on Podia as well, but my links constantly broke, so I moved it to Gumroad just last week (and discontinued my Podia usage).

My goals are to add more freebies, another couple of paid ebooks on writing, and a self-publishing course to help writers, starting as I did in 2019.

Why Gumroad?

Here’s the thing. If you have 10–15 posts on any platform on the same topic, I believe you can turn that into an ebook. If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of self-publishing an ebook on Amazon, I think Gumroad might be a good starting place.

Or, maybe you don’t want to write a book now, and you want to create some informational products to help people. This can be done on Gumroad, and you can start making some money right away.

Gumroad is a great place to help people start out and potentially create some additional income to help with self-publishing efforts, pay your bills, or compensate for inflation.
