Why Should We Be Thankful

A COVID-19 Thanksgiving — Bah Humbug

Why should we be thankful this year? Thanksgiving — yeah, right. I don’t see it. This has to be the most depressing year I’ve witnessed in my greater than a half-century of existence.

Alone. That is how many of us feel. We are alone in a world full of others we interact with via computer and telephone. Minimal personal contact and limited interaction with our families meaningfully is depressing.

We are out of touch

We are literally out of touch with those around us. Except for the people in our immediate household, we lack meaningful interaction. As a professional who deals with colleagues across the state and across the country several times each year, I know what I’m talking about.

It is strictly business to have conference calls and video-conferencing routinely, and even when emergencies strike. It isn’t enough for the status quo. To develop and build meaningful personal and working relationships, we need personal interaction that only in-person meetings can provide.

We lose sight of how people respond and what their body language and other clues show a person’s genuine feelings. We need to be with people to get an actual feeling for how they are holding up, how comfortable they are with an issue, and actual communication.

Video conferencing is better than conference calls, but it continues to miss the mark. Face to face, in-person meetings are paramount to delicate and important communications.

Family

When was the last time you heard of a distance relationship really working? Same for the family. The love is still there with family because you have a shared history.

Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but it also pulls heavily on the heart-strings when we really miss the ones we love and can’t be with them. A letter is warm, a photo or email too… seeing and hearing them is wonderful yet still pulls at us emotionally.

Nothing can take the place of a heartfelt embrace. Returning from business trips, even though I’ve spoken to my wife every night and on the road — there is no comparison to holding her in my arms when I get home.

Thankful and blessed

We are at wit’s end with the pandemic. The mitigation efforts continue to try our patience and understanding. As we long for the social and intimate relationships we took for granted, we must remind ourselves of our blessings.

  • We live in a country full of faults, and we may get involved to change things we dislike.
  • We can’t be with the people we want, because we are protecting them from danger.
  • We hurt because of the changes in our lives, as we love those we want to be with.
  • We can be thankful we want to be with others, and they want to be with us. We love one another and like sharing our lives with our friends and family.
  • A pandemic is temporary, as is life. We must make the best of things we have little control over so we can enjoy what we have.

We are quite selfish about our wants and demands. That’s okay. We all want what is best for our family. It isn’t always easy to do what’s asked of us. We must do the best we can and move on.

The grass is always greener on the other side, and it’s always darkest, just before the dawn. — I know, I stayed up all night once to check it out!

In closing

May you live long and prosper.
