Why Should Aspiring Book Authors Take Promoting Stories Seriously?
If you think getting more reader’s for your stories is a challenge, wait until you self-publish your book.
I’m a self-published author who wants to share some important information with aspiring authors. I write for a variety of categories on Medium, and I share advice and opinions on everything from relationships to book writing tips.
This story is about the latter, or rather, specifically about marketing and promoting your first self-published book.
Just in case you’re about to click away from this story, thinking this information is too premature, trust me, it’s not, so please keep reading.
Who this Advice is For
This information especially applies to those would-be authors who plan to use the Amazon KDP services, and list their book title in the Amazon marketplace.
You need to understand the vital points I’m about to share, whether you’re just getting started with writing your first manuscript, you’re done or almost done, or you’ve only recently made a solid decision to write your book.
The sooner you recognize the importance of this advice about what I share, the sooner you can take action, so you can give your upcoming book the kind of advantage that other authors will wish they had.
Book Success is Not Automatic
Those of you who have read at least one of my various profile-like stories, already know that I’ve self-published two full length novels under a different pen name (Charm Baker).
Of course, I’m immensely proud of having completely written two novels, both of them being more than 60,000 words in length. However, book publishing and book success are not the same thing.

The promotional ad you see here is just one of many that I previously created and posted on social media a few years ago. In spite of all the days, months, and years that I’ve invested, going it alone as a self-published author has been an endless struggle.
Although I still haven’t given up, there is always the periodic hiatus, as well as the occasional loss of focus, which can sometimes last for months.
Getting discouraged and taking too long a break can cause your motivation to cool off. Admittedly, I can blame some of my lack of success on this common writer mistake.
But at the same time, my books have nowhere near had the visibility or readership that I expected. That means they have not had the reviews they need for the success that I imagine.
The reason for this is based on the significant role that marketing and promotion plays in your books exposure. Exposure is what leads to views and reads. Sound familiar, like somewhere else you know of?
I know. That’s why I’m talking to you and trying to drive home this point.
Be prepared to encounter the same challenge you may be facing here on Medium, with getting eyes on your writing and gaining loyal readers.
Remember Your Abandoned Stories
Sad to say, many self-published authors, myself included, have abandoned their books and left them sitting on the Amazon shelf, with little to no attention from the author for months, maybe even years.
You may be thinking that won’t happen to your book, especially since you’re going to be the author who writes the next best seller.
But keep in mind, just like so many of our Medium stories that manage to go unnoticed, the same thing is happening to numerous new titles in the Amazon marketplace.
Final Thoughts
If the points brought out in this story is something that you’ve never given any thought to, now is the time.
- Don’t end up finally writing your first book, only to have it end up like so many well-written and still forgotten Medium stories.
- Start reading and paying more attention to writers who write about various ways to gain readers and build a loyal following.
- If you’re a person who hates the idea of trying to start an email list, it’s time to get over it, and learn to do it now.
- No matter what stage of book writing that you’re at, start increasing your knowledge about Amazon KDP or whatever distributor you plan to use.
- Read information and watch videos about how to gain book reviews and how to actively pursue potential readers.
Remember, the above activities may seem too early to worry about, and probably sound tedious and off putting. But regardless of what you think , you can start taking steps now, to help your book gain visibility and those highly coveted readers and reviews later.
