Why Receiving Is As Important As Giving In Any Relationship
Whatever comes to us is for sharing, and by sharing we also receive
I believe most of us affirm it is ethical to give, although some overdo it because of their generous nature, while others are meanie with a poverty mentality, believing they have to withhold for the future, in case a need arises.
I am not sure about other religions, but the Christian faith affirms giving as a way of life and teaches that giving is a route to abundance.
‘’Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands — all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.” Good News Bible (Luke 6:38).
Without much ado, most of us recognise that giving is eternal truth, so why then do we restrict giving as a way of life? It is the poverty of faith that translates to that of the mind.
‘’A generous soul will be made fat. And the one watering others will himself be freely watered.’’ Proverb 11:25
Giving Need Not Be Money Only
The reason some people believe that they only have to give out money, and they do not have enough. If money is the only thing we can give, then only affluence will be able to keep the commandment. Luckily, there are many things to provide, care, cooperation, assistants, volunteering, listening ears, shoulders to cry on, compliments, indeed the list is endless. And if we have a heart of giving, the paradox will become known as the need arises.
5 Benefits Of Giving
Giving makes us happy — Giving gives the feeling associated with pleasure in the brain, and this is good for the body. The Harvard study revealed that money spent on others makes us happy.
Giving leads to longevity — The only reason scientists allude to this is that giving reduces our stress level, thereby preventing chronic illnesses, which are usually caused by stress.
Giving improves a general social connection — When we give to others, there is a mutual loving feeling from those we give to, they feel grateful and closer to us, improving our social connection.
Giving bring forth gratitude — As I mentioned above, we are grateful if we are shown some form of generosity, which is also essential to health. Gratitude in itself impacts our emotional health making us happier because it releases the happy hormone, oxytocin, the feel-good hormone that reduces blood pressure and increases the cortisone level.
Giving, like a smile is transferable — Have you noticed that if you smile at a person, the person tends to smile back to you? So is giving. There are some who are so impacted by the generosity shown to them that they vow to do so and more to others. This creates a network of do-gooders in our community and in the world at large.
What About Receiving?
We are constantly admonished to give to others, in love, kindness, empathy and in whatever we can. The admonition indicates that there will always be those who are destined to receive and receiving is as important as giving.
We know some people have problems receiving from others. This is because they see themselves as a burden by asking for help or discussing their problems with others. They do not want to show their vulnerability. In that wise, receiving is a gift to the giver.
Receiving should be with appreciation and gratitude, communicating an appreciation of what the giver has to offer. By receiving with appreciation and gratitude, you are also symbolically receiving what the giver has to offer in the relationship or as a person.
Allow another person to help you and be that part of you that God extends His goodness. Be a gracious receiver of God’s blessings.
“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” –Maya Angelou
Giving & Receiving Is A Necessary Flow Of Life
Deepak Chopra explains the necessary flow of life in which each one of us partakes. This flow must continue, otherwise, there is stagnation. That is why it is important to be a good giver as well as a good receiver.
‘’Nature provides perfect examples of this dynamic exchange of giving and receiving that is necessary for the flow of life. You receive the gift of oxygen from trees, and you give them carbon dioxide. Insects receive nectar from flowers, and they give the gift of pollination. Symbiotic relationships are abundant in nature and are needed for the ecosystem to continue to thrive. Since you are also part of nature, you too need to both give and receive to stay happy and healthy.’’
There are many ways to strengthen the flow of giving and receiving in your life. These are simple things like praying for another, genuine compliments, hugging and a warm handshake, always saying thank you and giving anonymously.
