Why Read The Book Of Proverbs

The wisdom of God spoken to us through Proverbs

The Book of Proverbs is one of my favorite books of the Bible.

Yes, I have said this about The Gospel of John too, but that's because each book has a special place in my heart. You see, Proverbs gave me a place where I could learn from the Bible and apply it to my everyday life.

Once I started to do that, I started to see major changes in my life.

Now, that is not to say there are some strange things in this particular book of the Bible. There are. But, there are many things that have the power to transform your life just like they did mine.

Below are a few reasons why we should study the Book of Proverbs.

We Find Wisdom and Advice

We wish to fully comprehend this collection of proverbs that teach us how to live godly lives and how to reflect God’s glory in the smallest parts of our lives and relationships.

It’s the difference between seeking advice from Proverbs and seeking insight from it. It takes more emotional work to seek wisdom rather than merely counsel, but it’s worth it! This is because Proverbs’ wisdom moves us beyond ourselves and our own lives to someone else — our covenant Lord.

It reminds us that wisdom is essentially about who God is and what he has done for us, rather than what we do. That is the book’s central theme and the major motivation for reading it.

We Find Wisdom for the Present Age

What drew you to Proverbs in the first place? One thing is certain: the desire to gain biblical insight. And if you know anything about Scripture, you know that Proverbs is the place to look for it.

Many of us admire Proverbs because of their practicality. Every verse appears to offer us insight — a new way of thinking or being — that will help our lives operate a little more smoothly.

And, because Proverbs gives us a lyrical roadmap of how God made the world to work, following its practical day-to-day instruction does make our lives more enjoyable. However, if that is the main reason we read Proverbs, it will be empty in the long run.

We Find Ourselves In Each Chapter

Proverbs contain people who are similar to us — fathers, mothers, children, friends, and coworkers. We find wise men and women, as well as fools. We see the passionate as well as the slacker.

We come across both persons who are tempted by sin and those who tempt others. There are people who embrace God’s methods and those who disdain them throughout the book.

Every time, we are shown that one’s future is determined by the orientation of one’s heart. We’re meant to perceive ourselves and our deepest needs with passion, poetry, and a dash of humor.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, we find a lot in the Book of Proverbs. We find ourselves, wisdom for the present age, and advice on how to live. There is a connection made between us and the God who created us.

Most of all, we will find true wisdom and knowledge that points to Jesus.

This is why I love the Book of Proverbs. After reading the Gospel of John, it is the next best place to start when it comes to reading your Bible. It will give you a great deal of insight to live your daily lives.
