The Portuguese Madeira Island has become popular among digital nomads worldwide. One of its small sunny villages has recently caught everyone’s attention (mine included).

The island’s location near the equator means it has mild weather year-round, and it’s one of ten locations designated as “digital nomad friendly.”

These factors combined make Ponta do Sol an attractive destination for those seeking a new place to live or work while traveling through Europe on their terms.

Portugal’s new VISA program for digital nomads

The Portuguese government implemented a new digital nomad visa program in October 2022.

The Portuguese government has recently launched a new visa for digital nomads.

This temporary stay and residence permit visa can be requested as of October 30th at the Portuguese consulates or at the Foreigners and Borders Service.

The new Foreigners Law foresees measures for remote workers in Portugal. For the application for a residence visa for remote workers, there are only two requirements that differ from the previous D7 visa:

  • Proof of average monthly income over the last three months in the minimum amount of 2820€ (in 2022).
  • A document ascertaining the applicant’s tax residency.

Travel to Madeira is on the rise

Madeira’s location near the equator means it has mild weather year-round. The average yearly temperature is about 22 degrees Celsius (71 degrees Fahrenheit), with an average of 300 sunny days per year.

This makes Madeira an excellent place for digital nomads to work, as the perfect climate gives them more opportunities to do outdoor activities, such as hiking and surfing during the day, and then working on their laptops at night, in coffee shops and cafés all over town.

Ponta do Sol: a digital nomad’s dream workplace

Ponta do Sol is a small village on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Madeira is an island off the coast of Morocco.

It has become a popular tourist destination because of its mild climate and beautiful scenery.

Situated on the south coast of Madeira island, the village has about 8,200 inhabitants in its area of 43.3 km2.

“Ponta do Sol” can be translated as “Sunny Point.” Probably because it’s the location with more hours of sunshine daily, this means you can enjoy your free time outside whatever time it is.

Why Ponta do Sol became a teleworking dream hub

Digital nomads are flocking to Ponta do Sol attracted by its fantastic weather, free Wi-Fi, low cost of living, and proximity to the sea

Not just the low cost of living and pleasant weather makes it so popular.

According to the mayor, Célia Pecegueiro, “Ponta do Sol is a small municipality that has managed to find its way to position itself within the Autonomous Region of Madeira as a land of art, culture, creativity, and people who have the ambition to go further.”

As a bonus, there are cheap flights from Lisbon or London Heathrow airport directly to Funchal airport, which is only 35 minutes away from Ponta do Sol by car.

If you’re living in the US, you’ll be happy to know that SATA Azores Airlines is operating two weekly 7-hour direct flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Airport in Funchal, Madeira’s capital.

The digital nomad’s village helped put Madeira among the best places in the world to work remotely and enjoy a nomadic life.
